I gave birth at Chichester 18 months ago (and used to work there for eight years - admin not nursing though). They have a home-from-home room which looked pleasant and a birthing pool. The care during delivery was good but I didn't rate the before and after care much!

For example -

They "forgot" I was still catheterised so didn't empty the bag for ages, and couldn't understand why I felt I needed a wheelchair AGAIN to get to SCBU (dd was emergency caesarian 2 days after induction and was running a bit of a temp) to BF in the middle of the night. No, I couldn't walk as they suggested, dragging my bag behind me!

I was able to stay on SCBU when they deemed me fit enough, but I was on iron pills after the birth and had to walk down a floor to the maternity ward to collect one each time I was due to take it. I obviously could not be trusted with more than one at once!!

I know how hard the catering staff work and how little budget they have to produce meals so haven't really any gripes about the food itself, but when I moved to SCBU there was no system for the food to follow me, so either I or DH had to go and fetch it - when you're trying to fit that into breastfeeding etc I often had cold/no food.

I was promised a shower and never got one (in a week of being hospitalised).

It was a bit of a mixed bag - some of the midwives were lovely and some just really couldn't give a t*ss. SCBU staff were all lovely (although I hope your friend doesn't need them!) Other people have said how wonderful their experience of Chichester was, so maybe I was just unlucky!

i am planning to have my second baby at st richard's chichester (first in private hospital in london - emphasis on natural birth blah blah) worried that about ten women i have met recently from the area have all had caesareans at st richard's and worrying that the rates might be quite here. though maybe just an unlucky sample rate??
