What does it mean if your membranes come out 'ragged'?

Just wondering, because I remember overhearing this. Does it possibly suggest a previous leak etc. or could it indicate something has been left behind?

(pure curiosity as not having excessive bleeding or anything )

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Mine came out ragged and yes something was left behind, i had heavy bleeding which led to infection.

if it comes out ragged they can't be sure it has all come out, the likliehood is that its not all come out.

hmmmmm, my membranes were ragged after my VBAC but they never mentioned anything about some placenta being left behind to me at the time..... I would never have known to watch out for infection and I only knew about the raggedness once I got hold of my notes. Makes me a bit annoyed as I would have liked to been forewarned, it's my body after all!!!!

but then as i had forceps maybe they shoved their grubby little paws up me to check but I didn't notice with spinal and being in a state of rapture and elation over my beautiful daughter...

I had ragged membranes after DD was born. A great chunk of membrane came out when I was in the bath a week or so later. I would hazard a guess that unless some of the placenta is left behind they don't want to to dig around.
