If you were induced for going over/ after waters broken but no labour...

...is there an increased chance of either of these happening in a subsequent pregnancy?

With my first DC I got induced at 41+6. The induction was originally booked in due to going so 'overdue' but in the end it would've happened anyway because my waters broke 36 hours before I was due to be induced and labour didn't start in that time. The induction was quick - contractions started about 3 hours after the pessary was put in and DD was born 4.5 h later.

I'm now expecting DC2 and starting to think about birth plans. I'd be choosing between home birth or MLU if I have my way but part of me wonders if there's any point in getting my hopes up that I'll go into labour spontaneously.

So, for those that have had an induction for going post dates or for a no-show labour after waters breaking, and gone on to have more kids - did it happen again? Does anyone know the stats on the likelihood of either of these things recurring with subsequent pregnancies?

Have you ever heard of a woman being pregnant for 44weeks? No need to get induced unless there is a medical need i.e. olighydramnios or GD. You WILL go into labour, it might just not happen when the hospital wants it. Dc1 born at 40+11, dc2 at 40+7

My understanding is that all pregnancies are different and I was told by my midwife that there was no reason to think this might happen again. 39 weeks now and really hoping she is right.

I was induced after waters broken and no labour. Ended in forceps after 3 days.
Dd2 arrived day before due date in 1 hour from arriving at hospital. Very natural labiur and contractions all day but could cope.
I never would've believed my second labour when I'd had my first!
So in my experience totally different!

I did hypnobirthing with dd2 as I think I was so worried about labour that that didn't help the first time round and made me tense and scared.
Could've been coincidence and I could've still had a great labour second time round but who knows!

My waters broke at 35 weeks but I failed to go into labour and had to be induced, when I asked consultant about potentially the same happening again she said there's no reason why it would, each pregnancy is different and it could happen but it doesn't necessarily increase the chances of it happening again.

That's reassuring, thanks folks! I really hope it's a case of every pregnancy is different. Granted, accepting the induction is all a matter of personal evaluations of risk. I think this time I would probably hang on a day or two longer if it was just a case of being overdue but wouldn't want to go an awful lot longer than 42 weeks.

Good luck @Havetothink, hope you're not kept waiting too long now!

I had waters breaking before labour 4 times out of 5 births. My youngest was induced, next youngest was a c-section and the other 2 came on their own on the day I was meant to be induced.

The trouble is, there is so little research on what would happen if you let it run it's course BECAUSE of the pressure to induce by 42 weeks. So it's not as simple as saying you don't see women walking round 44 weeks pregnant... the vast majority induce at around the 42 mark. I'm currently 40+4 and really don't want to get induced but may end up doing so...

First baby - planned home birth, was 41+5 when labour started naturally after we'd gone home from hospital, refusing induction until 42+1. Waters needed to be broken though and we ended up in hospital to do that.

Second baby my waters broke and after monitoring at hospital we agreed to wait 36 hours before induction and went home. Labour happened spontaneously at 41+6 the next morning and had a successful home birth.

I think the fear of induction gets them moving!

Just to update, dd2 was born at exactly 40 weeks, went into labour spontaneously and waters did not go early. Totally different experience to my first. Good luck OP Smile

Yay! Congratulations @Havetothink!

Following with interest as first pregnancy my waters broke at 38+6 and I ended up on the drip after 24 hrs of only mild and niggly contractions. Actually my induction was a very quick and positive experience, but I am really hoping for things to progress naturally this time around! Mainly as I want a water birth if at all possible.

GreenMeerkat · 15/10/2018 21:48

My waters broke at 41 weeks with my first baby and I was induced on drip (due to meconium, but they said my cervix was fully closed so unlikely that labour would have started any time soon). She was born by EMCS (distress) at 41+1

I went into spontaneous labour with my second baby at 40+3 so it doesn't necessarily mean it will happen again. Unfortunately I had to have another EMCS due to infection but if that wasn't there I could have laboured normally.
