Induction - is it worth hubby coming?

Hi all

First baby being induced next Tuesday 2pm, at 39 weeks. Husband doesn't finish work til half 5, works 15 - 20 mins away from hospital. Do you think it's worth him being off that day or is it a waste? I know everybody's induction seems to be different but wondering how likely it is that things would kick in that quick. Also, is it worth him being there when they put the pessary in etc?

Thanks for all your advice. My mum is going to come up with me until hubs arrives, we have decided if I start contracting quickly it will be the same as if that had happened at home. Fingers crossed!

My experience was about 2 hours hanging around and being monitored before the pessary was inserted. However once it was inserted things moved quickly and I needed my OH there to alert the midwife. If you cannot have your OH there get someone else to accompany you from the beginning.

Personally I wouldn’t worry about having him there, I was induced in May and my sister was induced Friday just gone both were 5 day processes. In hindsight, i should have told dh to go to work.

Glad my husband didn't take the day off work, have been called twice now and told not to come in. Have to call back at 6pm, to see if they have a bed but I'm not holding out much hope!

I was induced with my first baby and he was born two and a half hours later so I'd say it's worth him being there if you want him for support during the labour, it might be quicker than you expect!

I was induced at 7pm and by 8pm I was having contractions every 1-2 minutes. Was a bad reaction to the pessary and at 10 they gave me an injection to slow it down (epic waste of time, ended up re-inducing with the drip the next morning - throughly believe I would have progressed quicker if left alone!). My baby girl was eventually delivered by emergency C section at 4.09pm the next day, so it isn’t that hubby not being their would have meant he’d missed anything, but the experience was terrifying and I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to be alone.
Could he take a half day or arrange an early finish? You’d probably be ok for the first hour or so on your own as they just do check ups and monitoring etc first

Glad you can definitely have you mum there. I was going to say that for me it depends on your reason for induction and how they induce. I needed my husband wit my me for mine as mine was because my waters had broken the day before and although I was contracting I wasn’t making sufficient progress. I didn’t have the pessary but went straight to the drip. I was meant to go on the drip from 8am but they left me a bit longer as I wanted to use the pool so I didn’t go on it until around 3pm. By then I’d been quite uncomfortable, had my remaining waters broken manually and was already knackered. I couldn’t have done the drip without my husband being there.

Oh I didn’t read to the end either. Hope things went well for you.

Sparrowlegs248 · 30/09/2018 08:35

Ime I'd say no. I was due to start with having my waters broken at 1pm Monday, followed by hormone drip if nothing happened. Didn't get waters broken til Friday at 1pm. There were women on the ward who'd had the pessary and were there 3 days before anything happened!

Sparrowlegs248 · 30/09/2018 08:36

Oh sorry!! Hope all is well, didn't see the second page

You won't be induced at 2pm. When you arrive there will be paperwork, they'll take blood, you're likely to be stuck on a monitor for half an hour as a minimum.

Every induction is different as to how it will progress. Mine was v quick - from pessary in to baby in less than 7 hours - and they had to take the pessary out after 45 minutes as I was contracting so hard.
