Worried that my episiotomy scar will burst open where the stitches broke last time

When I had DD 4 years ago I had an episiotomy. The stitches burst and it didn't heal together properly. I'm pregnant now and I'm really worried that I'm going to tear in the same spot and make it worse. As far as I understand, these kinds of minor injuries are not repaired post-birth on the NHS. Has anyone had a similar issue with burst stitches? Did it get worse after your second birth?

If you rip giving birth they should stitch you back up straight away. What makes you think they wouldn’t? Ask midwife or doc?

Well, they didn't do anything when my stitches broke last time. I guess it's but a very big issue but if it happens again it will be.

After reading this board I kind of relalised that there are women with third degree tears who have been though a lot worse than I have so I feel a bit silly now for posting this.

Sometimes if the stitches give way it is better to leave the wound to heal over itself. The stitching creates tension as the tissues swell up after a few days. Stitching it again can in some cases cause more problems than it solves.

I had a huge episiotomy with my first after an instrumental delivery. No problems with 2nd and 3rd - small tears repaired with a stitch or two.

Thank you! I have a sort of "indentation" in the vaginal opening and I'm just a bit worried that this will open up more. But I guess if it does tear there, they will stitch it and hopefully my stitches won't burst again.

I’m in exactly the same position, my stitches came undone & I healed up, but apart (if that makes any sense). I’m due in 2 weeks with number 2 so I’ll let you know what happens!

Thanks little dinosaur! I hope you have a good birth.

DS2 arrived yesterday, was 1lb8oz bigger than DS1. I ended up with a first degree tear which didn’t need stitching in a different place to my episiotomy. Hope you end up with similar, good luck!

I didn't heal properly after my episiotomy. When I mentioned it, I was told there was no point doing anything as I could have a second child. Two years down the line I told them again I didn't want a second child and could they please look into it.vthe GP said she agreed that it affects my quality of life but not to the extent that this would warrant to have anything done on the NHS. I am half thinking going private now. If I were to have another child I would probably be hoping that if I ended up with an episiotomy again, hopefully it would be where the old one was so it could be stitched up better. Probably wishful thinking...
