2cm dilated at sweep with first baby

Hi there, FTM and looking for some advice.
38+2 today, high risk so was offered a sweep with consultant today as will be induced on due date.
He said my cervix is 2 cm dilated and 1cm thick? Anyone know what that means? He said he thinks I'll deliver before I get to 40 weeks.
Also had what I believe to be some of my mucous plug pass when I got home.

I'm uncomfortable but not had any signs of labour. My Braxton Hicks have been strong for a few weeks now.

Any advice appreciated.

Watching this thread as I am booked in for the same thing on 11th sept at 38+1 and need all the knowledge I can get! Fingers crossed it all starts quickly for you!

Tilliebean · 21/08/2018 19:13

With my first I had a sweep at 39+6. I was 1-1.5cm dialated, but fully effaced. I think the 1cm thick is talking about how effaced you are. So your cervix opens but also becomes thinner as you labour.
My DD arrived the next day after a relatively quick labour. My contractions started with a couple hours of my sweep, but I’d been having them irregularly through the nights for a few days before my sweep. The sweep just made it all kick off properly!

Blissfulignorance · 21/08/2018 19:17

@Tilliebean that's a story I like to hear!

I don't think I've had any real contractions but certainly plenty of strong braxtons. I've bounced on the ball for ages but my back gets sore after a while so now I'm soaking in the bath.

With my first I had a sweep on the Monday and she said I was 2cm dilated and he would be with us by Wednesday. He was born on Wednesday Smile

I also had a little bit of mucus plug on the Monday, it was bout the size of a 20p and I thought wow I’ve passed my plug! LOL I passed my actual plug on the Wednesday shortly before giving birth and there were NO doubts about whether that was it or not 😂

Good luck! Won’t be long now Smile

Blissfulignorance · 21/08/2018 20:10

Thanks @Condragulations
TMI every time I go for a wee there's more plug coming away.
Really hope I don't have to wait too much longer.

Definitely doesn’t sound like you will! So exciting! Smile

60sname · 21/08/2018 20:24

I gave birth two days after the plug first time, and about 12 hours the second time. Good luck!

60sname · 21/08/2018 20:26

Oh and the second time I was only 1cm at my sweep and gave birth 24 hours later...

GinIsIn · 21/08/2018 20:27

I was 4cm dilated when I went for my first sweep. DS arrived a day later.

Pissedoffdotcom · 21/08/2018 20:27

With my 1st i had a sweep at 3cm & gave birth the next day but i had lost my plug 3 days prior.

2nd i had 2 sweeps. Took 4 days for her to arrive. Grr.

3rd...well lost the plug at 38 weeks, BH constantly. Sweep at 40, was 2cm. Sweep at 41 weeks, still 2cm. DS was born at 41+6 after i had given up hope.

Afraid it is swings & roundabouts!

Blissfulignorance · 21/08/2018 21:26

I'm still super uncomfortable but no signs of contractions yet.
More plug coming away though.
Will keep you updated!

I'm betting the baby will be here by morning! Good luck x

Blissfulignorance · 22/08/2018 04:30

Still no sign of baby, insomnia is settling in nicely though.

Lucky you! I went for a sweep yday at 39+1 and cervix was still way too high, baby hasn’t moved into place yet.
Obviously then she started mentioned the bloody induction word. Sad
Good luck for a swift delivery for you!

Blissfulignorance · 22/08/2018 10:08

@Grumpos I would have cried if they told me my cervix was ready, I'm sure I've felt a little skull sat in my vag for weeks! Everyday it's more and more uncomfortable! I've got a week and a half before my induction. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

A little skull sat in my vag 😂

This has made me chuckle.

Good luck! I had a sweet at 39+6 (was in for reduced movements and asked for a cheeky sweep) I was 1cm, he wasn't born til the Tuesday. Long hard labour but I can't wait to do it again!

Pissedoffdotcom · 22/08/2018 11:52

Grumpos i was booked in for induction twice (41+5 was cancelled, then booked for 41+6) & my DS decided he didn't like that idea so appeared at 6.30am as i was due to be induced at 12pm 😂 if you end up being booked in keep cajoling your bump!

laelti · 22/08/2018 17:05

I was 1cm dilated (can't remember the rest but I think Bishop's score was 5) at my sweep at 39+6.
Baby was born 40+4 - turned up to hospital 8cm dilated before my plug had even gone.
Definitely means you're on the right track, good luck!

Blissfulignorance · 23/08/2018 08:59

Still no baby!!😭

Utterly miserable waiting which seems like a horrible way to feel. Can't help it though. Baby has been so active the last few days too which normally I'd be happy about except it's soooo uncomfortable particularly down below. Someone send help

I didn’t have a sweep but I had an internal exam (they do them all the time on this country Hmm I think I had about six over the course of my healthy, normal pregnancy and they bloody hurt) and was found to be 2cm dilated. I had no idea!

That was on the Wednesday - on Sunday I gave birth to my son Smile

Good luck OP!

FartnissEverbeans · 23/08/2018 09:50

Meant to say, I had no other external signs of labour until my waters broke on the Sunday morning.

Joeybee · 29/08/2018 19:38

Your cervix is short and you're starting to dilate so means your body is starting to get ready to go into natural labour. This is good as it means you may avoid a medical induction on your due date.

Blissfulignorance · 29/08/2018 21:00

Thanks @Joeybee

I saw the midwife again today, she did another sweep, still 2cm but cervix is now 0.5cm thick. Lost more plug since but nothing as yet. Induction booked for the weekend. Hoping I can go into labour before that 🤞🏼
