Does the baby's movements slow down/stop when labour is starting?

Just wondering.... I'm 39 plus 3 today and the baby is as active as ever. Can I expect his or her movements to change as I approach labour (looking for signs!) and when you are in active labour can you still feel the baby kick?

I was always advised if movements slow or stop completely, go straight to hospital. Sorry dont know if its also a sign of labour

beckmo · 03/06/2007 21:11

Thanks.I would contact the hospital if the baby wasn't getting its kick quota in....I'm kind of looking for the impossible with this thread....trying to get someone to tell me when I can predict I'll go into labour. Very impatient!

They do have less room to move as you get closer to labour but I was told by my midwife that if I felt the baby's movements stop completely and couldn't get them restarted with a cold drink and a lie down, then I should call immediately, even if I was in early labour.

Trying to think back to when I gave birth - I think I felt him up until the waters broke, then I can't really remember. I definitely wasn't concentrating on DS's movements by that stage, too much pain/too much to think about! Also I guess he did not have much room to move about after the waters went.

I just remeber things didnt feel normal all day, i know thats not helpful, and didnt get past 5cm, which was the point that i felt pain!!

My DS was still moving wildly during labour and hasn't stopped since. Wuite different to his sedentary sister. Go for different signs of labour instead - any nesting

babies do move during labour, they help themselves to get born!!

watch out for a show, back ache, the runs, all those sorts of things can indicate labour on the way !

Only read the OP. My LO was kicking and twisting right to the bitter end

Get eating Dairy Milk - I swear that is what set me off x

Thanks all. I think I imagined the baby would stop moving once in active labour so that is really helpful to know.

I will also be paying close attention to the advice on Dairy Milk!

Hiya, I was wondering the same thing! Do you feel in total denial that anything will ever happen? Cos I do!!

Here's hoping we both get started soon xx

Wilkie · 04/06/2007 08:31

BTW Beckmo - it was a FAMILY SIZED dairy milk . Ate it at 11am, went into labour at 3pm

(Also some lucozade - don't know if that is a fallacy (sp?) but also drank a small bottle of that after the chocolate)

Enjoy and sending labour vibes your way.

lulumama · 04/06/2007 08:33

my sister was told to drink lucozade to get her slow labour kickstarted..all that sugar must do something!

Ds defo kept moving and after the waters broke it felt weird just to warn you - not uncomfortable thougha nd quite exciting really cause you knew it was close. I started with contractions that I just knew weren't braxton hicks - low back ache and across the lower part of my stomach. They built up gradually through the day and increased once I started walking round so an important thing is to keep active. My friend swore by a curry and a bit of loving from her dh - she did both and then by the morning she was having contractions!!! A sweep can bring on a show and get things moving sometimes so maybe at 40wks the midwife or doctor might do one for you. Good luck!!

My DD moved alot during labour, she slowed down nearer the 2nd stage.

beckmo · 05/06/2007 15:21

Thanks everyone. The legs wiggling around and head outside of body description sounds like avery odd sensation!

Wilkie -I'm going to try the Dairy milk tommorow (trying an eat all you like curry tonight and don't want to be too full!)

Hey Flightattendant!I know what you mean although the first of my antenatal group popped yesterday and I have started to have some ongoing period type pains which reassure me that SOMETHING is happening however little. But my I'm impatient...keep forgetting there is actually a baby at the end of all this!Having clary sage baths...if nothing else I'm very clean.

Countto 10 -thanks you. Beeing offered asweep on Friday and think I will give it a go...as for the loving. Yup. I'm trying everything. Poor man.Less loving, more physiological miracle.
