had first section in 2003 after major fetal distress and second in september in 2006 after going into labour at 41 weeks and contracting straight away. found that if i sat down they would stop and after 52 hours was only 3cm so had another section. thinking about possibly having another one but the thought of having another section isnt great but is it really that dangerous to attempt a vba2c?

DaisyMOO has had a VBA2C, or was it a HBAC? my memory is pants at the mo!

there are things you can do to encourage a better labour and delivery, if you search VBAC on here, there are lots of threads

yes, there are risks, Daisy has good stats on them...

this is a good site

I think that generally they are not keen to 'allow' vaginal births after two caesarians but there is no concrete evidence that it is unsafe. Of course another concern for you is the fact that if you only got to 3cm after a long time the same might happen again...although of course it might not.

I know of a lady with loads of kids, at least 2 were caesareans and the last two were homebirths.
If you really want to, phone the 'Birth Afterthoughts' at the hospital (or ask your MW if she's nice) to recommend a pro-VBAC consultant. Then once you're pg ask your GP to refer you so you can start discussing it. Sounds like you just had bad luck rather than anything that should automatically preclude a vaginal birth.

agree with bouqets...have emailed this link to daisyMOO too

Hi jenjins, tis true, I did have a homebirth after 2 previous cesareans. The reason that VBA2C isn't usually advised is that it has been thought in the past that the risk of uterine rupture is unacceptably high after more than one prior cesarean. After 1 cesarean, the figure usually quoted is 0.5% risk of uterine rupture of which 90% of babies will be fine if delivered within 20 minutes. The received wisdom has been that the risk of uterine rupture increases with each subsequent cesarean and so generally women who have had 2+ cesareans will be advised by their obstetricians to have an elective cesarean in future pregnancies.

However, there is increasing evidence that the risk of rupture is not significantly increased after 2+ cesareans, suggesting that vaginal birth may be as safe an option as after 1 cesarean. There was a huge study done last year which backed this up.

Unfortunately vaginal birth is not usually presented as an option to women and if you want one you may need to be determined as depending on your consultant you may be under considerable pressure to opt for an elective cesarean. There's a vbac yahoo group which I found helpful in getting practical advice and also support when the medical establishment was making me feel like a complete loony for going against the grain and not having an elective cesarean.

I did lots of research on VBACs and birth in general and it was absolutely the right choice for me and it was a fantastic life changing experience. However, it wasn't easy and it isn't the right choice for everyone so my advice would be to have a good think and do your homework before making a decision either way. HTH a bit.

thanks everyone for your advice will have to look more into it. there is still a part of me that thinks i can give birth myself and what happened with my previous birth was almost a common thing to happen with a first birth even though it was my second with failing to progress but who knows!! at least this time i went into labour myself and experienced that part and was dissapointed not to go all the way as i was so traumatised by my first birth which was extremely scary and took me two years to get over it but at least we were both ok at the end of it. will have a job convincing the other half to have another bubba first!! x
