Home birth questions

Hi All

I think I should of asked my midwife about some of these by now but have been a bit laid back about the whole thing, so thought I would ask you ladies instead. The midwife knows I am having a home birth (she asked at the booking in but hasn't mentioned it since) so my questions are

  1. If I need an episiotomy does the midwife have local anestetic sp? with her?

  2. Does she have pethadine with her, i had it last time but really want to labour without it this time but I think I would be more relaxed knowing it was there in case.

  3. Will the same one stay with me however long it takes, if so what kind of things do midwives eat

  4. Will she think my house is tip?

Any help welcome!

i think they will carry local anaesthetic...or an epi can be done at the height of a contraction when your tissues are stretched and you will not feel it!

you can have it, sometimes you need to have it prescribed. gas & air also . I think you will find that being relaxed and at home will be a fab pain relief too !

she will stay with you however long it takes, teh second midwife might not stay as long, but the two will be with you when you deliver . Midwives like bacon butties, choccie biccies and tea !

she will assess your house for tidiness and cleanliness before she will decide to stay and deliver !

No doula i'm afraid, DP only just agreed to a home birth, but I will be having a lovely live birth thread on here so hopefully you will be around!

I have looked at that website (love the birth stories!) it's what keeps me focused when yet another person tells me how crazy/mad/brave I am or looks at me in smug manner of one who knows better

when are you due?

will make sure i am on the computer, waiting !!

was at a homebirth the other day, and i can say, 100 % that it has only convinced me more that home is a great place to give birth, and that if i should ever have another, will be a home birth, without a shadow of a doubt!

  1. Yes- had it for stitches
  2. I think you may have to get a prescription for it from your GP
  3. I think so. I only had one - the 2nd didn't make it in timefor the birth.
  4. Mine never mentioned it!

Oh no! There I was, sailing along, looking forward to my home birth and now Lulumama has COMPLETELY freaked me out. We're veggie and DH is never going to make the MWs bacon butties. Not even if they save my life AND the baby's life AND his mother's life. Do you think they'd notice if he served up Quorn bacon - I can't tell the difference myself.

Hi I have been to many lovely home births so feel that I am a good one to say something here. The best ones are the ones with chocolate, biscuits etc In the area I work in we do carry local anaesthetic but hardly ever need to do an epi at home, I think I have been to about 20 - 25 home births and have never done one at home. Where I work we are not able to give pethidine at home but I find that most people who have had babies before and ask for pethidine normally don't get much benefit from it before they deliver. The midwife will not necessarily stay with you as she will have an end time to her shift, in some areas they do 12 hour shifts even in community so you have a good chance of the first midwife being the one who delivers you. I had a homebirth myself in March, it was great and I will definately do the same if I go for a third one. We munched on dried mangos and jelly babies, I relaxed in my comfy birth pool and actually really enjoyed the day. I was aware that I made more noise than first time around but I think that knowing that a load of my collegues were around in the building first time round made me a bit inhibited, it did hurt a bit more second time round but I think that being 2lb heavier was probably the reason for that!

At my homebirths I made toast and tea for the mws, which they seemed to like, and orange squash for dds as it was SO hot! We did offer them cake, but they didn't want any!

lulumamasmentee · 01/06/2007 20:19

lulumama - ten weeks to go, but went a week early with DD so here's hoping, the midwife said I can labour at home from 37wks

So chocolate, biscuits, bacon sandwiches, tea, cake might do some crumpets too and don't worry about the house

I will ask about the pethadine, epi situation. I'm not sure why I had one before to be honest and DP doesn't remember why either, at my antenatel class the midwife said they hardly do them anymore?

Thanks for the replies
