Following on formt he related thread - if you had a CSec first time around and went for a VBAC second time. How long was the labour and did you dilate inthe first labour?

I had a CS first time (never got past 3 cm after 9 hours + breech presentation). My midwife says labour will be quicker as is my second the consultatn says the labour will be more like a first.

You might want to ask the hospital what their policy is on how long they will let youlabour before they abort the VBAC and go for emergency section?

I recently heard about a hospital which has just change the policy to only allowing 1 hour. Who labours for only 30 min? IS that even possible, let alone probable.

Now, I'll admit I'm no fan of VBAC -- not for me anyway. But, if someone wants a VBAC surely it is not realisitc to restrict them to 30 minutes? Maybe I heard the story wrong and they sai "push" for 30 minutes?

i did not dilate past 2-3 cm in my first, induced, epiduralised, stuck on the bed, diamorphine hazed labour

with my VBAC I had 15 hours of contractions, OP baby, who turned, I was then in established labour for only 3 1/4 hours, , pushed for 30 minutes...no intervention, intact perineum, lots of gas and air and a smidge of pethidine!

for a VBAC, i would look into having a doula

IME there is no 'definitive' time. There must be progress at each examination in active labour. Eleusis - I think that policy is rlating to second stage but again, that is not policy everywhere. In my unit, as long as progress is being made it takes as long as it takes.

I think Mears unit has it right.....

far better to take each VBAC as an individual case..if policy says ' c.s after 6 hours if not got to 10 cm ' , but you and baby are doing well after 6.5 hours, you should be able to carry on labouring....

No labour at all with first baby..induction didn't work to dilate me so straight to cs.

Second baby - induction - 1.5 hr labour- fab time! Not sure if there are any rules really.

Didn't labour at all for my first and don't even think I dilated. Waters broke, he was breech and that was that. For the VBAC, I was in labour about 8 hours and pushing for about 45 minutes of that. Hospital were very supportive and never even mentioned c-section or time limits.

Hex - curious that you were induced. I saw the consultant on friday and he wanted said he wouldn't induce (in fact wanted to book my CSec!)

I was in early stages of labour for 24 hours, then had waters broken. Went into full blown labour and baby was born 5 hours later after 2 hours of pushing! Had an epidural after 2 hours which had worn off before baby was born (quite unpleasant!). Definately went over the hospital time limit for pushing but the midwives were adamant that the baby was going to be born without intervention and we managed to ward off the hovering consultant. I had to have stern words with the consultant in order to get some extra pushing time though. Also, the baby showed no signs of distress at any time. I agree that having a doula is a great help though.

Forgot to say, on being induced, at my hospital they did give the option of being induced with a drip for a few hours as they felt that was controllable. They definately didn't use the gel on the cervix method.
