Induction - Start to Finish - Long

So due to previous health condition my ob has decided that he would feel more comfortable inducing me at 38 weeks. I have no problem with this he also wants me to be monitored constantly and have an early epidural not too sure what this means and when I asked how early it would be given he said the midwifes will let me know and make sure I'm comfortable with it before I have anything. What I'm afraid of is how long I'm gonna be in the hospital for as being restricted in movement by monitors and drips and then the complete inability to move might stress me out. How long did it take between being induced and actually giving birth? TIA.

Hi I was induced. Was admitted at 4.4pm, had pessary to bring on labour 7.3pm, started having mild contractions within the hour, getting more intense as the time progresses. Daughter delivered healthy and safely at 12.40am. So all in all was roughly about 5 hours.

I’ve been induced twice. First baby was 23 hours from first pessary to holiding the baby. Third baby was 13 hours from first pessary to holding the baby. I had a syntocin drip with the first induction but not the second.

Three long bloody days. Was admiutted Wednesday evening after my waters broke
Gave birth early hours of Sunday morning.
Pessaries did nothing, but the drip worked within hours

2 days for me, first pessary at 10am. Next one 7 pm. Next one 8am. No signs of anything so I was able to walk round, go to cafe for lunch etc. Final one After tea, still nothing. Visiting ended at nine and midwife did a quick internal still nothing so sent DH home. Half an hour later, went to the loo, had a massive poo and waters broke. Bang straight into labour. Baby born a couple of hours later! So in actual labour for two hours.

househunthappening · 30/07/2018 06:32

1 induction here.

Pessary at about 10am, first sign of labour at about 2am, baby born at 1:15pm. So my entire labour was just short of 12 hours, plus a day of waiting around in hospital.

strawberrypenguin · 30/07/2018 06:52

My first was long - three days. Most of that was 'getting started' once they broke my waters it was 7 hours to baby being born.

Second was much quicker, in at 10am and baby born at 2am the next morning.

SnuggyBuggy · 30/07/2018 06:54

I had to go straight to the drip as my baby had an irregular heart rate. Only took 6 hours and slept a lot of it.

Liz38 · 30/07/2018 07:04

About 26 hours for me, ended in an EMCS due to lack of progress. I got to about 9cm and stayed there despite all efforts (including a doctor trying manually to push me the rest of the way). What I would say is that I wasn't stressed by it at all and wasn't really aware of time passing, it's a very weird state of mind. Although in my case I suspect the medication had something to do with that! It was fine, obviously not what I'd wanted but in no way upsetting, traumatic or distressing. Good luck.

Mine didn't work. Two pessaries, nothing happened. Had CS on day 7. Spent a lot of time playing board games... Grin

JessyJames · 30/07/2018 07:40

1st pessary at about midday, 2nd at 8pm.
Waters broke around midnight, baby arrived at 6am.
Home in time for dinner that evening.

DuggeeHugs · 30/07/2018 08:04

Mine didn't work either. It began when I was admitted on 39+2 and ended with an EMCS on 40+0. I now have a more detailed knowledge of the hospital site than most staff.

Jessiejuju · 30/07/2018 09:27

Thank you this has been very helpful just want a rough idea on how long to be prepared for.

Is this your first baby? Inductions are so variable. My first was induced at 34+5 and took about 10 hours. Second was induced at 42 weeks and was fully dilated about 40 minutes after they put the drip in!

Jessiejuju · 30/07/2018 14:34

It is my first so have no idea what to expect.

Mine was 75 hours total. Waters broke spontaneously on the Monday at 2am, came back to the hospital at 10pm due to contractions not starting. pessary put in at 2am, fell out the me t day about 11am but they didn't put another one in as they said I had started to dilate. But still no contractions, so was taken to labour ward to start drip at 2am on the Wednesday. Cervix wasn't ready and midwife said they should have given me another pessary. Had to have my waters broken manually again after 8 hours of drip starting as I hadn't progressed at all(still only 2cm dilated) after that things ramped up but was still in labour for another 9 hours after this, so 17 hours total from drip starting to my baby being born. I hated it and feel quite upset by it all now, especially as the extended PROM meant that my baby ended up in hospital for almost a week after with sepsis

SnuggyBuggy · 01/08/2018 08:34

Charlotte, I had the same thing with my baby having sepsis. It's a grim thing to go through.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 01/08/2018 08:39

5 hours to get to 2cm, then baby born 40 minutes later. First time mum BUT i was 10 days overdue so maybe that made some difference. I think my body overreacted to the pessary which can happen.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 01/08/2018 08:44

had a CS on day 7

ShockShock bloody hell poor thing!!

Littlemissdaredevil · 05/08/2018 10:29

I think it very much depends on how ready your body is to begin with. Before I was induced at 38 week my bishops score was 5 (apparently if it was 6 they would have gone straight to the drip)

In total it was 6 hours from start of induction to baby. Contractions started within an hour of the Propess being inserted. However, 3 hours of that was pushing/being prepped for theatre/forceps delivery. So I went to 10cm from not even a twinge in 3 hours.

If I had another induction I would insist on an early epidural (but my baby was back to back as well)
