Vomiting during labour

When i was in labour with DD1 I was horrendously sick, couldn't keep anything down at all, even a sip of water came back up. When i got to the hospital i was given anti emetics, which helped loads.

Due with DC2 in 12 weeks, and would love a home birth. The midwives don't carry anti emetics, and I'm quite worried about being so sick again (I'm trying to get anti emetics prescribed by the gp, but he's reluctant, and instead has advised me to not eat large meals during labour Confused).

Has anyone had vomiting during one labour, and not another?

I was very sick in labour with DD...thanks gas and air Hmm
Was induced and it was all very quick and very stressful which I think aggravated the vomiting.
Had a home birth with DS, avoided the gas and air and was fine Smile
No vomiting and was able to drink plenty and kept popping those drumstick squashies sweets Grin

I was sick twice during my first labour (nothing like what you experienced) and wasn't sick at all during my second. Second labour was much quicker though!

nomorespaghetti · 19/07/2018 20:53

Thanks both! I am hopeful, but i do seem to throw up at the drop of a hat during pregnancy Envy

I threw up in both labours. I felt it was something to do with a hormone rush, as it happened both times when things were ramping up. I have no other evidence for that, though!

WeShouldOpenABar · 19/07/2018 21:47

I think mine was the gas and air i remember frequently calling for a sick bowl, I also drained a small tank of gas rapidly because I felt no affects from it until I'd inhaled a large quantity

WishUponAStar88 · 19/07/2018 21:49

Yes I vomited every contraction first time round, no vomiting at all on second birth Smile

Cleo2628 · 19/07/2018 21:49

I was sick in my labour and my midwife said it was a “normal reaction to the pain”?

annlee3817 · 20/07/2018 06:51

I was sick throughout labour but wasn't given anything, just threatened with a drip if I didn't try to drink something. I took small sips of still lucozade throughout and that helped a little energy wise

@CAAKE

That is what it felt like to me, the hormone rush when things really ramped up. I hadn't had a big meal as had spent the evening on midwifery assessment unit (then eventually been able to go home), and hadn't had gas and air by that point. Bitch of a midwife, when I arrive back at hospital (the others were all lovely) tried to tell me it was due to pain (I didn't vomit once when I had an open fracture of my leg so I'm pretty sure that is not how I respond to pain!), But then refused to give me any pain relief as I wasn't far enough gone (she put me down as 1cm and had me walk round to the prenatal ward, i we assessed as soon as I got there as 5cm and sent back round to a delivery room on labour ward!!).

I was projectile vomiting (just made it into the bathroom at home, sprayed the mirror and blocked the sink), eventually got anti emetic injection after a few hours and was then able to have gas and air, morphine and keep sips of water down. All my labour treats I had pack myself stayed in my bag.

I had hyperemesis so don't know if there is any correlation between that and severe vomiting in labour.

strawberrypenguin · 20/07/2018 07:14

Not during but I was sick just after both of mine! I'm assuming it's a hormone thing.

Cantstopworryingaboutit · 20/07/2018 07:18

I'm sick throughout and after all my labours, and always need multiple anti sickness injections.

LastOneDancing · 20/07/2018 07:20

I vommed through my first labour, and was equally sick after DS2s ELCS.
I guess with me it's either hormones or a reaction to medication?

No morning sickness at all, but my God my body made up for it for 48h afterwards Confused

Merename · 20/07/2018 07:20

In my first labour I had a home birth and later transferred, and vomited several times throughout both home and hospital. At home it started after an examination when I thought I had made more progress than I had, and I felt it was linked to my fear and emotional state at that stage. It's a bit chicken and egg but all the vomiting was associated with the hardest times and not the times when I felt I was coping. In hospital it was similar but I felt gas and air played a part for me, and again I wondered if it was psychological as I expected it to make me sick because it had made my mum sick! In general I was amazed in labour to find out how much my mind affected my body, i.e. Contractions slowing every time a midwife arrived etc. I would be pushing the gp for the anti emetics if I were you - you are entitled to the same care in a home birth where it's reasonable and this one wouldn't be hard to achieve.

InNeedOfALieInNow · 20/07/2018 07:21

I’d try a different gp. Although the above replies have given me hope that my first labour and puking withevety contractuon mightn’t set the precedent for this time

DwangelaForever · 20/07/2018 07:29

I was sick in labour too it was horrendous, I think it's my bodies natural way of coping with pain as I've been sick with bad period pains, when I've badly stubbed my toe etc.

Pregnant atm with my second so I've no experience of a second birth with no vomiting but interested to see the responses. Although I'm hoping for a repeat section this time (first labour ended up with EMCS) and only planning on labour if I go myself before section date!

DwangelaForever · 20/07/2018 07:31

Also I don't think it was gas and air for me because I was sick before I had any gas and air, continued to be sick when using it but then I stopped using it cause I felt it wasn't working

nomorespaghetti · 20/07/2018 20:26

Thank you all. My sickness started about 10 hours before i started having contractions, so wasn't due to the pain (doctor suggested that too), and was well before gas and air. I will keep persevering with the doctor. I know that gps will prescribe the meds because several people in the local fb homebirth group have said as much. I must admit i felt very irritated by being fobbed off by this doctor. It felt like another example of male medics dismissing women's problems. But i am very hormonal so maybe I'm being unfair.

i keep wondering this, i was horrendously sick in my first labour, i was sick so much it made my waters pop, sorry for tmi, and im curious as to whether its likely to happen again as id really rather it not, theres enough going on without being sick on every bloody contraction

Putbiglighton · 30/07/2018 14:49

Second labours can be very different from first, IME. With my first I was sick as things began to really get going, it felt like it needed to happen, if that makes sense. When I got to 4-5cms I was violently sick and my waters went with an audible pop!
Second time, no vomiting at all. A midwife told me it can have something to do with the position of the baby. First was posterior and I had a lot of sickness and stomach problems. Second was in an excellent, textbook postion and I could really feel the difference during labour.
