Eating after c section

I'm having my first c section in a couple of weeks... second dc. And I wondered when you can eat afterwards?! I've got to get there first thing and wait and see what the emergencies are like before I go in, which I've been told can (understandably) take a while.

Were you able to eat soon after? I always feel really weak if I go a few hours without anything! Blush

Don't eat immediately afterwards!! I did and was really ill after my first. D&V (despite a midwife telling me that the D wasn't physically possible). The anesthetic can make you nauseated and I had terrible bloating after mine.

My second was planned and I didn't eat anything after 9pm the night before. I had him at about 1pm. Honestly, I was that nervous before and that exhausted after I didn't want to eat. I was ready for something to eat by the time I got taken onto the ward, which was about 6-7pm I think (was evening) and I had some toast with no problems.

I had mine a year ago and was asked not to eat anything too heavy for the first 24 hours because your stomach etc have been handled and are settling back down. I went for a super classy, light first meal of flaming hot monster munch and a snickers bar Grin

@SamanthaH92 my first emcs was terrifying for myriad reasons and I have many blanks. My second was also an emcs but not really an emergency in that we were both okay and it was calm. It was a joyous, wonderful, funny, celebratory day. It doesn't automatically follow that a first difficult cs means a scary second one.

@showofhands my first was planned but i think it was the not knowing what to expect and now i know what to expect I'm worse this time. I spoke to the midwife the other day and she said the not knowing is sometimes better! I'm hoping for a better experiance this time both surgery and on the ward x

What is it that worries you in particular? Is there anything you can do to lessen the fear of those elements?

Thank you all so much for the helpful replies! Hopefully I'll feel well enough to eat, I'm planning an epic sandwich! Grin

I was warned I'd be sick if I ate afterwards...then within a couple of hours, a new nurse came on duty, asked what I'd eaten - and got really cross that I was 'being silly not eating'.
They made you go to a room for meals (couldn't have food brought to beds), and I was really shakey and couldn't walk (eventually diagnosed as being very anaemic), so only got toast when DH came in at night for the first 2 days, it was horrible.

I was given tea and toast with butter about 30 minutes after coming out of theatre. It feels like the best meal you've ever had!

I had my pre op today in preparation for DC2s arrival in tiesday. The midwife said there was some new research that showed chewing some gum in recovery and waiting an hour before eating massively reduced the wind and sick problems as it gives the stomach a nudge to wake up without having to deal with solid food straight away.

Good luck!

I'm a nurse and the usual advice post surgery is sips of water, if tolerated then tea and toast, if tolerated then eat whatever you like.
I would stick with that, and have some nice snacks in your bag for if you are feeling peckish.
Ask your anaesthetist, I find they are pretty relaxed about these things.
Good luck, enjoy the snuggles.

I was eating a load of toast about 30 mins after my c section.
