Requesting an elcs

Currently pregnant with no 2. I have a consultants apt in a few weeks as I'm now classed as high risk. I had a horrific forceps birth with no 1 - lots of complications with stitches, haemorrhaging, urine retention you name it. Recovery was a good 7-12 months, lots of appointments. I'm planning on requesting a elcs this time, my midwife thinks this is totally reasonable and my consultant first time round said it would be fine. But it's a different consultant this time... In your experience how did your consultant react when you requested an elcs? Did you have a fight on your hands?

Watching with interest as I also have a consultants' appointment this week and will be requesting an elcs after my first birth was an undiagnosed breech. while all went fine physically - emcs but quite relaxed - left me untrusting of midwives and the labour process since I went through 4 days of no sleep at all in a completely stalled labour and it messed me up. My midwife this time has said she agrees an elcs sounds best and also said the doctors were 'very reasonable' so I'm hopeful. Still nervous about having to relive the whole thing to justify my choice though. I hope your appointment goes well OP, and the consultant sees your point of view. Sorry to hijack your thread! Best of luck too x

Hello,

I had my first obstetrics appointment two weeks ago as I had an EMCS last time and I want an ELCS this time. The consultant went over my previous maternity notes, looked at what happened and referred me to the Birth Options midwife who will talk me through my options (VBAC Vs ELCS). However, the consultant said that after the Birth Options appointment, I will make the decision based on the information given by the midwife and they will support me whatever I choose. I'm not sure if all consultants across the UK are equally supportive but I wish you both best of luck! Keep us updated!

Emcs with dd1, requested an elective for dd2 and was no problem at all. They wanted to give me all the facts and risks of both options, but was then totally up to me. Elective was wonderful, fully recovered and felt great from day 10. Good luck xxx

I had forceps etc first time, requested a section for the second and they agreed no problem. I honestly thought I might have a fight because I actually suffered no after effects but they were excellent and agreed at my first appointment at 16 weeks

I had an elective c section 2 and half weeks ago. It was my third baby and my two previous babies where born naturally but both times I was left with a fractured coccyx which was agony and both times took months to heal, it still hurts now sometimes, almost 3 years after my last natural delivery! I requested the c section this time as didn't want to make coccyx worse but ended up having a fight on my hands. Took me 5 weeks and 4 consultants until I got the yes I wanted. Got booked in a week before I had my baby!!! The c section was great though and was out for breakfast then shopping in town just 4 days after! Was the right decision for sure! I think you just need to be persistent, if your consultant does say no then see another one. The 4th consultant I saw told me how the section costs the nhs a lot more money, which is a lot to do with why it's so hard to get an elective c section and it shouldn't be. I would of been in a lot more unnecessary pain which would of probably resulted in more visits to the drs/hospital in the long run if I hadn't gotten my section. You know what's best for your body and don't let them try and scare you about sections, I had a lot of that! Good luck with your appointment!!

No problems here, all agreed at my 16 week appointment and they didn't even make me see anyone from birth options! Mostly because I was firm and had obviously done my research.
I had previous emcs. My trust is very pro choice though
