Does anyone know why stork marks happen? And how long they take to disappear? Just wondering as dd has them?

dd and ds has them, one was a c-section, the other VBAC. No-one was able to explain why they had them, but you can hardly see dd's now unless she's very red faced, she's nearly 2.6 HTH

dd has one on back of head at her lowest hairline, My MIL and her mum, ie: grandmother and great grnadlother both have them apparenty in exact same place, barely notice dd's now as she has too much hair!

ds was born with stork marks on his forehead between his eyebrows and on the back of his neck just within the hairline. The marks on his face faded within a few months, then only showed when he cried and were gone completely by 1y. TBH I never noticed when the marks on the back of his head faded. I know thta it was after the forehead ones had gone and some time between 6-12m - ie they were still there when his hair started thickening and had gone by about 1y.

No idea why they happen, but I do wonder wheterh the fading has anything to do with exposure to sunlight, as the ones in front faded faster than those at the back.

Ds had several - on his eyelid and on the back of his neck. The eyelid one faded away within the first year and the one on the back of his neck is faded and covered by hair.

My dd has one between her eyes and one at the top of her neck at the hairline. They were quite angry and red at birth but have faded a great deal since (now 3.5) but they show up again when she is tired or angry. Wierd! She was a ventouse delivery but I alweays thought that it was just a form of birth mark and not really to do with the birth process. My ds has one on his eyelids and that is pretty faint now he is one.

what are stork marks...it sounds familiar

zebra · 11/08/2004 20:40

Stork marks are a kind of red blotch on the skin, typically on the back of the neck (where the stork was supposed to be carrying the baby?).

DS1 had a little one, DD had a big beautiful one (well, I liked it, anyway). It's gone now (she's nearly 3). She was born very fast, untraumatic birth, so nothing to do with that! Just thinking that DS2 didn't have any!

Ds1 had three - two on his face and one one the back of his neck - it can only be seen straight after a haircut. The facial ones faded when he was a few months old. He's now six. Dd and ds2 never had any!

Lowryn · 11/08/2004 20:56

I think DS has them either side of his nose, they look like broken capillaries? He also has a patch under his hair at the back of his neck but this one looks more like a spoltchy rash...Do they sound like Stork bites?

Linnet · 11/08/2004 23:21

dd1 and dd2 had stork marks on their eyelids. don't know when dd1's faded but dd2's are still there although not as noticable as they were she's 11 weeks old.

When I was born I had a stork bite on my back and when my little cousin came along 15 years later she had one in exactly the same place.

dd1 had neck and eyelid - dd2 had neither - nor did the boys come to think of it - funny!

The neck one got hidden by hair so I don't know what happened to that, the eyelid one used to flare up when she yelled, but only for a few months IIRC.

Talking of necks - aren't the backs of their necks the sweetest most vulnerable things.

Our son has a big v shaped one on his forehead, on each eyelid and on the back of his neck. The forehead and eyes are starting to slowly fade (he's 5 months), but the back of the neck is still very red. Our GP said there is usually a great improvment by 1 year. I was told that they are just a leftover from the development of the blood vessels as the baby grows. ! in 3 babies have a stork mark!
