How much lochia did you have?

Sorry if this is a TMI question but how many days/weeks did you have lochia for? Also, is there more for a c section or a vaginal delivery?

I believe it's the same if you have a c section or VB.

I had a c section and I bled for 4-5 weeks
The last week is hardly very much at all and pantry liners were enough.

AssassinatedBeauty · 27/05/2018 21:39

I've had c sections and mine went on for weeks, and would start up again if I did anything too strenuous. Heavy to begin with but manageable after a few days. I loathe wearing pads though so I found it one of the most unpleasant parts of the post natal experience.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 27/05/2018 21:40

Hardly any. Maybe a week and not much heavier than a period.

LadyPug · 27/05/2018 21:40

Thanks baby I’m only 4 days after section and my lochia has completely started to reduce and get very light. I’m pretty sure last time (also c section) I had around 6 weeks worth! Should I worry that there is so little?

Had to Google lochia... but 3 children all via vaginal delivery and 4-6 weeks was the average. No idea if it differs for c sections, I'd imagine not but given I had to Google lochia I can't suggest my thoughts on this would be worth consideringGrin

GeekyBlinders · 27/05/2018 21:41

I had it for about 10days - quite a lot heavier than my usual very light periods, but not as bad as a lot of my friends have told me theirs was.

PistFump · 27/05/2018 21:43

I had an elcs 4 weeks ago and mine reduced quickly only to pick up again and drop on and off randomly. Right now it's hardly anything. Look out for large clots or any foul odour.

chavtasticfirebanger · 27/05/2018 21:43

With a c section i had less than vaginal but it smelled bad and lasted about a month.
My vag birth lochia smelled fine

Iwantaunicorn · 27/05/2018 21:48

I had a CS, and it lasted for 6 weeks, then straight after I got my first period. Like PP, I also loathe pads, so it was a pretty miserable experience!

LadyPug · 27/05/2018 21:48

I wondered if it would differ between two births! Seems so weird one birth I would have it for six weeks and one it’s clearing up in less than six days!

ew1990 · 27/05/2018 21:48

Mine went on for weeks - at about 6 days PP I went to Asda and as I was walking around I felt a massive gush - it would stop and start again too

AthenaAshton · 27/05/2018 21:48

About 6 weeks. Nobody mentioned lochia to me before I had DC1. It was an unwelcome surprise...

CatherineCawood · 27/05/2018 21:49

I had 2 sections. Section 1 it stopped after 2 days. I was private care and my consultant said he had 'cleaned me out well'. It was a planned section sat morning no rush they took their time.

Second was an emergency section middle of the night and I bled for about 6/8 weeks after.

Maybe they just did a good job getting the gunk out?

LadyPug · 27/05/2018 21:50

Thanks Catherine! That’s so helpful, my first was emergency and this one was (also emergency but a category 3 so not really) that might be why!

5 days post c section; One heavy day, two medium and two days of spotting. Same for my DSis and best friend.

AssassinatedBeauty · 27/05/2018 21:56

Most of the blood comes from the wound where the placenta was attached, so how well the surgeon "cleaned out" your uterus wouldn't affect how quickly the wound healed.

LadyPug · 27/05/2018 22:01

Well it’s good to know some people are having longer and some less - this means there is no set length and I don’t need to worry about it being lighter than last time!

OP posts:
Babynonamee · 27/05/2018 22:07

Mine also became very light/almost non existent around day 5. It was when I wasn't moving much. Once I started moving around more and going for walks it started bleeding more.

ShowOfHands · 28/05/2018 02:05

Assassinated is right, it's nothing to do with how well you're "cleared out" as you're bleeding from the placenta site. It might affect initial bleeding but not length and heaviness after that first day or two.

I've had two emcs, first a crash and I bled for at least 6 weeks. The second was an emcs but unhurried like you op and it slowed down to almost nothing by 7 days but did start up again very lightly on and off for another week. I think I was much less anaemic after dc2 and bounced back better in all ways. It's certainly not uncommon for it to tail off quickly, nor for it to start up again.

Congratulations 😊

LadyPug · 28/05/2018 04:19

Thank you showofhands this is so helpful and great to know I’m not alone and that the difference is normal :-)

I had lochia for three months after my first though it did get lighter after the first couple of weeks. I was told by the doctor some women get it for up to six months.

DuggeeHugs · 29/05/2018 07:11

I had lochia for 6 weeks after my EMCS and 9 days after my ELCS. It seems to be very variable!

Saz1995 · 29/05/2018 07:13

I gave birth vaginally, I bled really bad for 2 weeks then it eased off.

Sleeplikeasloth · 29/05/2018 15:09

Elective section here, and was period like for maybe 5 days, then finished completely by about 7-10 days. Only really needed a thick pad for one day.

Namechange128 · 29/05/2018 15:13

Masses here for about 3-4 weeks - but I also have very heavy periods and the midwife said it was often related. My second, it stopped after 2 weeks then restarted 5 days later, which scared me a bit but was checked and all fine. Like periods, seems like there's a huge range of healthy!
