I don't have any advice, but something similar happened to a friend, she was induced due to pre-eclampsia, but it took a few attempts and she kept being bumped later and later because of emergency cases coming in.

Much sympathy to your sister, it must be awful for her. Sorry not to be of much help, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.

Hi myermay

Want to bump this for you as it sounds horrendous. I used to be a midwife but it's been 5 years since I left so I am not up to date.
I know that the gel/tablet does not always work first time (especially if a woman is well under 40 weeks as the body is just not ready for labour) and it sometimes takes days to get a woman to a point where the waters can be broken easily. It's not nice as the tabs/gel usually cause niggles and pain (as I remember well from being induced with ds)
Your sister is better off having her waters broken in the morning and during the day when there are plenty of staff etc around to help her if there should be a problem - if they break her waters tonight and then there are probs at 1.00am eg then there are many less people around(and if all then went wrong a solicitor would say that breaking the waters of a woman with a medical problem in the evening = negligence). It's horrible to think of your sister in pain but the staff SHOULD be monitoring her and baby. If complications should occur overnight then these would be dealt with. Unfortunatly it's well known in medical research that more deaths/injuries to babies at birth occur in births outside normal hours so I think your sister's hospital are probably doing the right thing in waiting until morning - however horrible this may seem to you.
As I say it's been a long time since I was a midwife and I know there are others here who may be more up to date but hope that explains a bit why they are waiting.

Hi myermay,
I had was induced with both babies, the first went fine, but the second time the midwife really rushed me, she kept bumping up the dose. After 3 hours I was exhausted (and I am not a complete wimp, first birth took much longer) and they were concerns about babys heartbeat. That was when they decided to do a CS.
From my experience, I would prefer the hospital to go slow. If they were worried about your sister or the baby, they would do something sooner.
Hope that everything goes well, and that you are soon an Auntie Myermay!

think what jamiesmum says makes a lot of sense

at least hopefully tonight, she can rest and sleep, and start again tomorrow

as has been said, if the body is not ready for induction, then it can take a really long time

the gel can irritate the cervix and make it painful

if the baby is happy, then no point rushing..giving synto could push labour along too qucikly before she is ready and cna cause foetal distress, so far better to let her rest tonight

if a womans body is not ready, it is not ready !! whihc is why it has taken her 6 days to get dilated enough for her waters to be broken..

chacha3 · 18/05/2007 21:39

irst child they broke my waters then put me on a drip which made the contractions quicker and sronger! on my second they inserted a pessary but i was already two centremetres dilated anyway!

Daisypops · 18/05/2007 21:51

when i was induced i only got to 1cm dilated, the doctor examined me and got me to 3cm so my waters could be broken, painful but I'm glad she did it as I just wanted to get on with it

Myermay,

does your sis know about OC Support ?

I am not a fan of induction and in this case I'd be thinking that a planned CS with a strong birth plan would be preferable, but that's me.

Are you able to go and be with her tomorrow, to give her support and love? I'm sure that by now she could really use her sister with her in this situation, I appreciate tho that you have your own priorities.... and it might not be possible.

MKG · 18/05/2007 22:47

I hope your sister is ok.

Another thing to remember is that once the waters break things can go pretty fast. It's probably best that they let your sister rest for the night.

hana · 18/05/2007 22:49

I was induced at 36 weeks with my daughter - i had 4 pesseries in the end, and it was onlyh after they broke my waters did anything really start happening - I was induced on a Monday moring, adn she was born on Thursday
hope things start happening for your sister soon
but bbabies born that early just aren't ready to be born, that's prob why the pesseries aren't working

akaJamiesMum · 19/05/2007 10:02

Hope all goes well for your sister today
