Im not going to worry myself, I would just like to see if anyone has had a problem dilating after having had laser treatment (after a dodgy smear test).
I had it 15 years ago, and was told a couple of weeks ago that I couldnt have my baby in a m/w led centre as per my wishes, as due to this treatement, I may have a problem dilating.
Ive not heard of this and wondered if anyone else has.
Mars, if you read this, dont worry, Im not going to freak myself out worrying about this, what will be will be, Im just curious.
And Im due tomorrow! So I will prob still be hanging on til june...

Hi,
I have had 3 births over last 6 years with no probs.re. cervix dilating.I has laser treatment on cervix 11 years prior to first birth(for abnormal smear result)
My midwife & Dr./Consultant were aware I had had laser treatment & they never ever said or indicated it would cause a problem with dilation.
I have never heard of this.Maybe someone else has heard of/experienced probs.occurring.

had it and was told by consultant there was NO effect on future childbirth but not had it tested .. nor will I'm afraid

I had this and was fully dilated before they'd even examined me. No problems at all.

thanks for your messages ladies.
on the one hand thats all great news, on the other hand it pisses me off that i was told differently and have not been able to have the birth I want due to what might happen ie 'scarring of the cervix'.

oh well. its decided now, must try to remain calm xx

Just to add my two pence worth. Had laser surgery and cone biopsy 5 years ago and just had VBAC and no problem dilating, although midwife did mention to me that there might be a problem when I was booked in (gee thanks just what I wanted to hear!).

I think laser treatment can have a positive effect too, in that the cervix dilates more easily!

Red

I had treatment too 5 years ago and I'm 37 weeks pregnant at the minute. I remember at the time being told it would have no effect on childbirth and I've recently checked with the midwife, who assured me there should be no problems.
I remember reading on the net yonks ago that if there was ever a problem dilating, all it takes is a simple 'massage', so to speak, of the cervix by a midwife, to loosen the tissue. If you are dead set on giving birth in the centre, why not mention everything you've been told on this thread and see what they say?

I have had 2 laser treatments on my cervix in Nov 04 and March 05. Follow up smears showed that my cervix was almost too tight for the doc to take a swab. Got pregnant early 2006. 9 hour labour in Nov 06, hefty contractions and a baby in distress showed that my cervix was not doing well. Only dialated 1cm in that time so was whisked off for an emergency c-section. Baby ok though think midwives, docs and surgeons did a great job and got me in there in the nick of time .

Recent smear test and chat with my gynecologist said I have cervical stenosis and he's only seen it twice in 15 years, just my luck! Still can't get decent swabs in smear test as its sooo tight. Will be having planned c-section next time! Frankly amazed that I got pregnant in the first place, but then again I did do handstands

Think its pretty unusual to get these probs though so I'm obviously just a freak! Hope it goes smoothly for you!

I had laser treatment on my cervix in February, 2002 and had no problems dilating normally.

Had my first in June, 2003 and second in December, 2005.

I did not have a cone biopsy, but a loop electroexision procedure.

i also read that it can make dilation quicker. ds1&2 both took a couple of days as i was induced, had laser treatment after ds2, ds3 took 4 hours from the first twinge. when i asked for a homebirth with ds4 i was told i would have to see consultant because of this, consultant said no problem. mw said all that could happen is you may take a long time to dilate so i would have time to transfer to hospital from home if there was a problem (live very close).
