Best maternity pads

Hey,
I'm 32 weeks pregnant and getting my hospital bag ready, what is the best maternity pads to get? I am thinking of getting always discreet or Tena pads, with a maternity pad in them, to save washing if I leak, any one done this?

You're best off getting some bog standard maternity pads to start at least with rather than sanitary towels. If you end up having stitches they can catch on a sanitary towel. I just bought supermarket ones, usually £1 ish for 10.

Thanks, that was meant to say alway discreet or tens knickers rather than pads

Get the really big thick long ones-I promise you'll appreciate the cushioning!! I found the thick ones are best for the first week or two and then your usual sanitary towels will suffice (in my experience)

The thick Kotex night time maxi towels are good for the first week or so. Once the flow reduced I moved to Tesco and Asda own ultra thin maternity towels. They were great too.
I also used the natracare ones but found they bunched up so I'd avoid those!

yellowmellw · 09/05/2018 14:43

I actually preferred maxi nighttime pads because the maternity pads are so thick that they made me walk funny.

I haven't had barely any bleeding but did have a heck of a lot of stitches - the think normal maternity pads have been a godsend!

Stroller15 · 09/05/2018 16:30

I used the standard ones too - both Tesco's and Boots ones were fine. I did need a heck of a lot more than I even imagined!

I like the Boots maternity pads. The big ones. They’re comfy and good quality (also usually 3 for 2)

Oly5 · 09/05/2018 17:15

Boots thick maternity pads. It’s true that you’ll be glad of the cushioning... and the absorbency. I was shocked by how heavy the bleeding was

happymummy12345 · 09/05/2018 17:20

I loved the Tesco maternity pads. They were very soft which made my stitches more bearable.
Don't get me wrong any maternity pad is uncomfortable because of how thick they are, but at least they are soft.
(FWIT I can't stand pads at all, I only ever use tampons for my withdrawal bleeds, but obviously I couldn't after giving birth).

Marmite27 · 09/05/2018 17:21

I found boots the best.

My 1st was born in September and there were none in any of the shops around me as the birth rate goes crazy, so I bought loads this time.

DH ended up getting ASDA to phone him when they had a delivery Shock

PalePinkSwan · 09/05/2018 17:23

Natracare are v good, sensitive on your stitches and absorb well.

Jupiter15 · 09/05/2018 20:43

Another vote for Boots maternity pads.
Not sure about the Tena pants.

welshweasel · 09/05/2018 20:47

The always pants are amazing!!! Comfy enough if you end up with a c section and absolutely no leaks. It’s my top tip for my friends having babies!

SmallestInTheClass · 09/05/2018 21:03

Big fat ones like boots or tesco. I needed than to be able to sit down for a few days. Don't buy anything with a mesh layer on top like most sanitary pads. I had a couple of stitches, which didn't bother me until they caught on the mesh and the pain was excruciating (sorry if Tmi)

laelti · 10/05/2018 12:31

Another vote for Boots maternity pads - they also do mats which I found quite good for putting on the bed so I could sit/lie down without anything after a shower and get air to everything - helps the healing! They also do a thin one which are more like a normal sanitary towel. Usually on some sort of offer I think.

I just bought massive black full briefs from primark (£2 for a 3 pack I think). First pair after delivery I threw in the sanitary waste bin with pad still attached. Super comfy and cheap and no hassle.

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 10/05/2018 12:35

Those massive ones from Boots, nice and comfy.

GummyGoddess · 10/05/2018 12:51

I liked the natracare ones, they're big, soft and squashy and don't have any added scent to them. I think I got through between 50 and 80 of them over the first 6ish weeks so have ordered 80 of them for the impending arrival this time. I used them with big knickers but the first week I had the mesh disposable knickers until the worst of the bleeding had stopped.

I also made freezer pads with them using aloe vera, lavender and witch hazel. That was quite nice and soothing after the initial gasp with how cold they were.

Would also suggest getting some bed mats or puppy training pads to put under you when on the sofa or in bed. I kept falling asleep on the sofa and DH didn't want to wake me when it was time to change the pad and used to cover me with a blanket and leave me there for hours! Occasionally this caused leaking onto the bed mats.

Wildlingofthewest · 10/05/2018 12:53

I used the mothercare own brand ones and then the Asda own brand maternity towels. I tried using an Always sanitary towel but it really irritated my skin/stitches.

BluePheasant · 10/05/2018 13:02

Another vote for Natracare. Used after birth of both DC.
