Accuracy of growth scans

Hello

Had a mw appointment today (I'm 37 weeks) and apparently my bump is on the 95th centile so am being sent for a growth scan. This is only because I want a homebirth and mw just wants to check I'm not going to be pushing out a giant baby on only gas and air.

DC1 was a 9lb homebirth so am not overly concerned.

However, my limited knowledge is that growth scans aren't that reliable. Has anyone got any professional experience of this?

Many thanks

Where I work they wouldn't scan purely for large for dates, only for polyhydramnious. Growth scans are notoriously inaccurate, especially closer to term and if baby is low etc. Would it change your plan if they told you baby was big?

No not at all! I've pushed a big one out before and don't doubt I can do it again. Mw just said it would be negligent of her not to refer me. She delivered the last one and it was all fine.

I got told my daughter was gonna be underweight and had 3 growth scans she weighed 7lb 2
My midwife said they ain't always accurate

And I had my son who was 9lbs at a doctor surgery didn't realise I was in labour 🙈

My current pregnancy is measuring big aswell but I'm having a home birth because I had a precipitous labour with my second

Notoriously inaccurate.

Delivered ds at home just over 2 weeks ago with gas and air only...he weighed 9lb8oz.

The accuracy depends on the skill of the person taking the measurements. It’s not normal to refer for a large baby however, I wouldn’t worry, clearly big babies are normal for you.

Not for me. I was scanned at 34+4 and told twin 1 was 5lb5 and twin 2 was 5lb8. They were born the next day weighing 5lb4 and 5lb8. I was told throughout that they were larger than a single baby at each scan and they were right.
