Been told I can't go to birthing unit?

My due date is in 6 days and when I went to see my midwife last week, she informed me that because of my previous labour which resulted in episiotomy and forceps, I have to go to labour suite rather than birthing unit and won't be able to have a water birth? As I will need to be closely monitored.

I'm gutted as I really want this labour to be as different to my last one as possible. I didn't want to be strapped to a bed with all the monitors and wanted to be able to move around freely.

Obviously if the baby was in any distress then I would do exactly as they say! But was just wondering if anyone has gone against what has been advised? And if they will actually let you if you tell them?

The reason MLU is not recommended is due to previous large blood loss, so more risk of this happening again.. although forceps May have been the reason for the PPH. You can speak to someone about this if you really want MLU... consultant midwife/professional midwifery advocates (whatever your unit has). A prev forceps/Epis/PPH is not an indication for continuous monitoring in labour either. Standard labour care and recommendation for active management of 3rd stage

I had a third degree tear first time, and was welcomed into the birthing unit with DS2!

Sounds like the MW has this wrong.

I would echo Mummyme87 - it sounds like the reason for saying no MLU is the PPH and that could easily have been because of the forceps delivery.

Give them a call and speak to someone as they might well be able to just make a plan with you, previous PPH shouldn't automatically be a reason for not going to MLU if you weren't transfused and there was a possible other reason than uterine atony.
