ive been told baby is big. at 36 week scan estimated 7.5lb from measurements. they said on average add half lb a week from then on. so could be 9.5lb or even 10 if i go overdue. i really want as natural a birth as possible. am i being unrealistic? its my first.

Ds was estimated at 7lb at 36 weeks and ended up being 8lb 3 at 41 weeks and 6 days.

dd was 9.9 - gas and air, 20 minutes of pushing. Ds was 10.6 - and I was in the bath at home at 7.00 in the morning - started to think - mmm, maybe we'd better get moving at 8.30am - he was born at 9.47am - 27 minutes after we got to the hospital. Lots of people have told me that bigger babies are actually easier to birth - the head size generally isn't much bigger than an average size, and the size means that once the head is engaged, the baby can't move back again!

our friends just had a baby boy
10lb 10oz ... they have called him Maximus!

hbbell · 14/05/2007 19:19

hi I gave birth to a 10lb 2oz baby at home as planed with no probs no stiches And he is very healthy. So it can be done with a good midwife although they did say I would not of been allowed a homebirth if they had known he was that big. So as long as you are planning for hospital birth i do not see anything wrong with planing for a natural birth Dont be pushed about! But if you are in hosp there will be people there to help should you need any

ChasingSquirrels · 14/05/2007 19:20

my friend had an 11lb 2oz boy in 2 hours - her 3rd. No 2 had been 10lb highoz (I can't remember) and was also reasonably quick.

BetsyBoop · 14/05/2007 19:33

after a growth scan at 36wks I was told DD would be 9.5-10lbs at term - she ended up being 8.5lbs, so they were quite a bit off. As has already been said growth scans are notoriously inaccurate (a lady in my baby massage group was told to expect a 10lber & hers was just short of 6lbs!!)

In any case it's not the weight that matters, but the size of the head (the rest will "squash" on the way out ) Women generally don't grow babies that they can't birth.

BibiThree · 14/05/2007 19:36

I was told by more than one midwife I was having a big baby for my size - an 8.5-9 pounder and I am 5ft. I had a 6lb 14oz skinny wretch who wouldn't come out naturally! Don't place too much on what might happen, just take it as it comes and see how things progress.

By hook or by crook as they say...

Ive just had 14lb 12oz of baby

In two sittings!!! Twins 7lb 14oz & 6lb 14oz

cece · 14/05/2007 19:54

DS was 11 lb 4 and much easier to get out than his 8 lb sister.

Oh and big babies are great when they are out too. Feed and sleep well ime.

snookie28 · 14/05/2007 19:56

I wouldn't trust the growth scans at all. On the Monday I was scanned and they said dd was 7lb. She was born on the Wednesday and was 8lb6.

daizydoo · 14/05/2007 22:30

I had a 10lb baby in Feb, needed forceps and episiotomy (sp?) to get his big head out! I had an extra scan at 32 weeks and was told he'd be a bit bigger than average and the midwife guessed between 8 1/2-9lb!! To be honest I'm glad I didn't know he was going to be that big. Have to say I'm fed up of being told I have 'huge baby', like I don't know!!!
Hope all goes well for you madeindevon2 - no-one can really know the baby's size or how you'll cope with labour.

hbbell · 15/05/2007 11:51

I was a bit sad Ds 10.2 was so big he looked like a 2month old.. But now he's One Hes so lovely the other babys are catching up and you would not know he was big at the start. Also very content and much better if they get unwell as they have more of a reserve.
Having a big baby can have lots of advantages (sometimes you can just be given too much info) please try to relax it will help

And they do say keep up the (sex) as its goood to keep those mussels supple...... to help with birth

katierocket · 15/05/2007 11:54

My first was 9lb 13oz, was fine (if very long labour - but don't think that was to do with size). You're not being unrealistic.

Weegle · 16/05/2007 16:08

Do I win the MN biggest baby?! Ds was 12lb 12oz. Can't say he was natural birth though I ended up with ECS but I don't think his weight had anything to do with why I ended up with that. And he was great as a newborn - sleeping 7 hour stretches at night from the start. So definite pros to them being big. And now at nearly a year, yes he is tall (wears 12-18 and 18-24 clothes) and 25lb but he doesn't look any older than his peers - but then he's got baby fluff hair and massive eyes to work in his favour.

MummyOnTheEdge · 16/05/2007 16:37

My first was 9lb15oz and I had no problems and no pain relief (just water).

I was warned my second baby was going to be big and was scanned at 36 weeks. She was 9lb3oz - bigger than average maybe, but not enormous! She too was born with no assistance and no pain relief.

I would agree that your position is important and also confidence in yourself (mindset, I guess). Just go with what feels right to you at the time...

kate100 · 16/05/2007 16:45

My boys were 9lb 11oz and 9lb 12oz, they were both born naturally without any stitches or tears. Ds2 was born very easily, didn't quite 'climb out', but not as much trouble as his brother.

My first midwife said that bigger babies were easier to deliver as they filled the whole space and there was less chance of their hands falling down by their heads.

smalltowngirl · 16/05/2007 21:15

DD 7lb 5oz. 3weeks early. 2000
DS1 9lb 5oz. on time 2004
DS2 10lb 1oz. on time 2006
Just had vaginal reconstruction!!
Honestly!!!!!
