Hi can anyone recommend the best post birth healing/inflammation management/soothing balm for post birth pain?

You can try taking arnica orally. I also found Epsom salts & lavender essential oil helpful (mix some salts and a couple of drops of oil into warm water and sit in it (either sitz bath, or actual bath).

I found a nice salt bath and huge cotton pants to be best. Big gussets.

KendalMintCakey · 06/04/2018 19:09

salt is a natural and works dont waste time and money on faddish sprays x ps Congratulations on your bundle of joy

KendalMintCakey · 06/04/2018 19:10

arnica is brill

Luckystar1 · 06/04/2018 19:11

I used witch hazel (the distilled stuff) on my post birth pads both times. It’s a LIFESAVER!!! I also used arnica pills with my 2nd and had very little pain/bruising.

Bananarama12 · 06/04/2018 19:12

Arnica is good. I didn't use anything on down below. Just keep it clean, wear maternity pads as they are breathable until healed and big knickers.

GummyGoddess · 06/04/2018 19:16

I made freezer pads, not even a tiny bit of the stinging while weeing that everyone said would happen. It was aloe gel, lavender and with Hazel mixed together, spread on pads and then chucked in the freezer. I separated them with parchment paper so they wouldn't stick together. If you google pad Popsicle then the quantities will come up within the first few results I think.

Lavender oil. Mix it with a bit of milk and then add to the bath with some salt as well. You need to mix with the milk as otherwise the oil will just sit on top of the water. You can sprinkle it on your maternity pads too

Put a few drops of Lavender and a few drops of tea tree in water in a plastic jug and pour over while you pee

Twickerhun · 06/04/2018 19:51

Thanks all! Where did you all get these substances from? Not something I see down at Tesco express

I think I bought them in a chemist.

I used a water bottle with a sports cap, tepid water with tea tree in it to squirt on while peeing.

A bath every night with 5 drops each of tea tree and lavender. Just enough to sit in and for about 10 minutes.

I also soaked gauze in witch hazel and kept in the fridge to add to pads when changing. Felt so lovely.

Teenytinyvoice · 06/04/2018 20:08

Holland and barrat (Barrett?) sell the essential oils, they also do an “arinicare” range, I used to use the bath oil.

Don't have any advice as I'm 24 weeks pregnant with my first but just place marking this thread as I have a feeling I'm gonna need it in 16 weeks!
Thanks for all the helpful tips and advice so far 👍😊

Teenytinyvoice · 06/04/2018 20:18

You can get doughnut shaped cushions to sit on, which I found v useful!

LRL2017 · 06/04/2018 20:19

I used hazel on my pads as recommended by my midwife and it was amazing! And then tea tree oil in my baths. Both worked really well

LRL2017 · 06/04/2018 20:20

I also took a pillow everywhere as couldn't bear to sit down without one if we went out!

Twickerhun · 06/04/2018 21:28

Thank you all

I would not recommend salt baths if you have had stitches (the salt encourages them dissolve). Lavender and tea tree are great.
