Advice needed re possible sweep and differing due dates

Pannacotta · 10/05/2007 14:36

My due date is 17 May working from my last period and my cycle was v regular. Afer my 12 week scan the EDD was brought forward to 12 May.
At last MW appt she told me at my next appt, a week tom when I will be 40+6 6 by scan date but only +1 by my dates, she would do a sweep.
I don't want any interntions if poss. Am booked for a home birth and feel confident the baby will come when ready. DS was in fact 2 days early so may be worrying for nothing. But can anyone advise me how to put my case forward if nothing has happened by next week?

Hi,i went 19 days with 2nd child and 21 days overdue with 3rd babies as had c-section with 1st and didn't want any interventions at all. Promised to keep track nof all movements and had scans every wk to check fluid levels etc. Had induction at 19 days and babe well and spontaneous labour at 21 and all well. Your right to refuse but let them know you'll be sensible.

numptysmummy · 10/05/2007 14:54

hmm,3rd baby not babies!

TheBlonde · 10/05/2007 15:08

A sweep is optional - you can refuse it

herbiemom · 10/05/2007 15:28

Simple - you just tell the midwife that you don't want a sweep and that you're happy to let nature take its course. It really annoys me when midwives say things like "We'll do a sweep if nothing's happened" - it's not their decision to make, it's yours.

Sorry - rant over.

Tell them you dont want it, I had 5 sweeps in the end with dd3, didnt do a thing! If you dont want it done, they cant make you, say no and say what you have said in your op. Sounds reasonable to me, if you want to change your mind later you can.

lulumama · 10/05/2007 16:07

a sweep only works if you are going to go into labour anyway within 24 - 48 hours .... and no-on can or should give you a vaginal exam and sweep without your consent

stick to your guns , you are right, baby will come when h e/ she is ready !

VoodooMama · 10/05/2007 16:09

I had a sweep and I found it pointless,, uncomfortable, a waste of time and it gave me the shakes for the rest of the day and quite upset me.

I agreed to induction at 40+11 days, wish Id given it a bit more time.

Best of luck, just see how you go.

Pannacotta · 10/05/2007 16:15

Thanks, will be firm. MW is quite scary but yes it annoys me too that she said she would do a sweep without even considering if I would want/agree to it.
Will try the pineapple juice etc etc before I agree to anything else!

I had a sweep 2 days after my second due date with DD (number 3)- I was enormous, very uncomfortable and had the most excruciating backache! My dates were 4 days apart according to the MW from LMP and Scan date. Nothing happened after the sweep - DD ended up being 10 days late.

If you can avoid it I would - it is not very nice - in my experience anyway.

lulumama · 10/05/2007 16:24

she said that !! in taht case, do not let her anywhere near your fanjo!

lots of sex and nipple stim will help get things going, and lots more fun than a sweep!

I had 3 sweeps for the same reason you are being offered one (arguments about dates).

anyway had 3, none of them worked still induced at 40+15, but the labour was pleasant so cant complain

Pannacotta · 10/05/2007 16:58

She didnt say "I will do a sweep whether you like it or not", but she did say to book in for an app for next Fri and that she would do a sweep then, IFSWIM, but given that would only be 1 day after MY EDD (not the scan date), I think this seems v early and also rather odd.
Had heard it is not v pleasant and she is a bit heavy handed so am keen to avoid it. Would also have to take my 2 year old DS with me and last time he came to an appt with me he spent the whole time crying (she is rather large and scary!). So yes will be firm and say no if the situation arises...

Can anyone explain how the scan date they give you can be more accurate than the LMP date, esp if like me you had the date written down of your last period and a v regular cycle? I don't understand why the scan date takes such precedence, since all babies differ in size, presumably even early on?

Thanks for the tips Lulumama, but not sure I am brave enough for sex or lots of nipple stimulation at this stage, though sure my DH would be happy to oblige!!!

a sweep releases certain hormones, that can kickstart labour

sex, orgasm and nipple stim release the same hormones, that can start contractiosn and ripen the cervix !

it is my standard line, in threads such as this

'have you tried sex and nipple stim?"

am going to have it printed on a t shirt i think!

lulumama · 10/05/2007 17:06

becasue medical science knows best

Pannacotta · 10/05/2007 17:12

I did know about the sex and nipple stimulation, it's just a matter of logistics esp when it comes to sex as am the size of a house now and quite uncomfortable.
Still must be better than having scary MW sticking her hands up my fanjo!

Summerfruit, not an exact science I think but like me you may well have a week to wait...
Or your baby might come inbetween the two dates.
