I'm scared of going into labour in the snow.

I'm due ds next week. An I've been having a lot of twinges, back pain and I know he's dropped.

The thing is, I'm snowed in. I have dd with me and dp but we don't drive.
Would an ambulance take me considering the circumstances? I'm so scared I won't be able to get to the hospital due to the snow.

999 operators all have stories of when they have talked Expectant parents through giving birth over the phone - remember, whatever happens you won’t be completely alone (turn your worry into humour if you can, by making dh and dd do a crash course in how to deliver a baby). And keep in touch with your midwife or unit by phone, let them know your situation and then maybe they can help you figure it out (my trust puts a call out to 4x4 drivers in the snow to help get midwives to people). But most of all, focus on soothing yourself, let others do the panicking, you have got to focus on letting your baby know everything is OK. Thinking of you ❤️

Me too, and I was booked as a home birth and they've bleddy cancelled it so we have to go in if I start tonight! And my PILs are snowed in where they are, so we have no childcare for DD.

Midwife swears that in conditions like this, they have far fewer women start labour. Your body holds on, knowing that it's best to wait. I reckon you'll be fine. Snow needs to bog off tomorrow !

Can you call a taxi?

NoqontroI · 18/03/2018 19:06

Although I suppose if it's going to take a while to get there an ambulance would be helpful. They did come and collect me in the snow when my home birth didn't work out.

No an ambulance would not attend unless birth was very imminent or had already occurred. I've used taxis in really bad snow. I would contact your maternity unit earlier rather than later when labour starts, and give yourself plenty of time to get there. If you get to hospital and you're not yet in established labour then you can at least negotiate to stay at hospital rather than going home and coming back (unlikely this would be an issue with second baby though Smile)

I’m not due quite as soon as you (about another 2.5 weeks) but my baby has dropped too and I am almost certainly going to need a c section (have one planned), so if labour starts I will need to try to get in ASAP. So completely understand the worry! We’re pretty snowed in here (and rural so 45 minutes from a hospital even when it’s clear). We do have a 4x4 so might be able to make it in ourselves if it came to it but if it looks unlikely I am planning to send out a plea on our local Facebook community group. In the last lot of snow quite a few local people who do off-roading and some of our local farmers were offering lifts in exactly these circumstances and also to get hospital staff to and from work - one fairly local lady had two midwives taken to her by tractor for a home birth. Honestly I think there’s a lot of community spirit so if you have a local group that really might be the way to go if it comes to it. Fingers crossed it won’t though. Alternatively might the air ambulance be able to get to you?
