Gestational Diabetes diagnosis at nearly 37 weeks, talking induction next week can I choose section?

Does anybody have any experience with this?

I have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes today after a weekend of blood testing and glucose in my urine at 34 and 36 week checks. I am going in now on Wednesday for a scan (have been measuring 5/6 weeks bigger since 28 weeks) and to have meeting with midwives, consultant, diabetes team etc... I have spoken to midwives and diabetes teams this morning both have said you will be induced next week (am guessing once I reach 38 weeks). Diabetes team have just said try and control your sugars best you can for the next week or so wish change in diet so baby is in best position to manage its own sugars once born.

My question is I had an emergency section with my first after going through most of labour and suddenly them realising she was an undiagnosed breech at 7cms dilated. So am already high risk and under VBAC team, I am really really concerned about being induced especially so early. My sister had a horrendous assisted birth this summer and I am just worried it will end in either another emergency section or just a long, painful labour which will make me exhausted and have a horrible assisted birth. I was on the back foot with my first having laboured for so long and still having a section. At this point I would much rather try some sweeps etc see if I go naturally but book instead of induction an elective but feel I may get a lot of push back on that on Wednesday or if it's even allowed???

If anyone has any experience of previous section/GD and then what the options are would put my mind at ease. I feel quite stressed about it all at the mo!

No GD experience, but as a previous C-section you are allowed an ELCS, they can't refuse you that. Especially if the other option is induction.

I had glucose intolerance on my second pregnancy so treated for all intents and purposes as a GD case. My hospital wouldn't entertain induction at all due to previous EMCS so it was a case of vaginal birth only if my body cooperated. What kind of induction are they offering you? I would've thought they'd be pushing you to an elective section to be honest, so at least they are trying to assist you with your VBAC more than mine does! If you want a section over an induction I would just be firm with them that it is your wish, I honestly can't see why that would be a problem unless they are trying to keep VBAC stats up and section stats down (I'm a cynic)

I’m surprised they’ve suggested induction over c-section. I had an EMCS for my first and have been advised that induction following section may increase risk of rupture. Maybe I misunderstood... I’m only 24 weeks and definitely having an ELCS for this one so not paying too much attention to other options! One to follow up though...

I don't have GD but I saw a consultant on friday as ds was an emcs and asked for an elective. She didn't even bother asking my reasons, just said yes so I would imagine you can just ask for one.

This reassures me a bit thank you ladies! I had a meeting with consultant back at 25 weeks and was going for a VBAC but I do not want induction particularly I feel so early on my body will not play along and will end in an EMCS or nasty assisted delivery. I have been told all along that induction carries higher risks being a VBAC and that they try to avoid it if possible with sweeps, membrane ruptures etc so I was hoping they would be fairly open to skipping straight to an elective. I have a good experience even being emergency last time and recovered well, all the positives I was going for a VBAC eg home straight away, quick recovery all seem to be looking a distant memory and I now have now reason I particularly want to go that route. This pregnancy has just been really horrible and hard the whole way through have been so sick even up until now and have really struggled and just don't have a good feeling about induction. I was all for a VBAC without any complications or problems but that's obviously not the case now and I would like the option of an elective I think, baby isn't even engaged so not sure how much difference a week will make but I don't feel like anything is happening as of yet!

I just feel an elective would be the way to go for me I just hope I am not in for a big fight when I go Wednesday as I feel they will push induction heavily!
