Average stay in hospital after episiotomy.

After spending most of the pregnancy either transverse or oblique DC2 is now head down but back to back. Hopefully they'll turn but if they don't from what I understand an episiotomy is much likely, so I'm preparing for that. If you had an episiotomy did you have to stay longer in hospital and if so how much longer?

Should say I'm based in the South West.

No, didn't change the amount of time I stayed, I was overnight just because it late and there was thick meconium. I left first thing neck day! 3rd degree here.

bassackwards · 03/02/2018 12:24

I stayed just one night after having an episiotomy, although they said I could stay another night if I wanted. I was keen to get home and am glad I left the hospital when I did, although I wasn't quite prepared for the pain/discomfort of it. Be sure you have plenty of paracetamol at home and somewhere soft to sit 🙂

Janek · 03/02/2018 12:25

I had an episiotomy during a home birth, so no hospital is necessary at all.

Desmondo2016 · 03/02/2018 12:29

No extra time at all. I'm the SW too and only stayed 20 hours after a Section

ToastieWarm · 03/02/2018 12:29

I had one on a mlu, went home after 11 hours and it was only that long because they had to observe baby.

RoryAndLogan · 03/02/2018 12:30

I stayed 2 nights but that was because baby wasn't feeding properly, episiotomy didn't affect anything in terms of when I was ok to be discharged!

Marcine · 03/02/2018 12:32

No extra time. Had an episiotomy with my second and was out in 8 hours, was in longer with my 3rd with no epi/tears.

FartnissEverbeans · 03/02/2018 15:49

I stayed two nights but that's the standard time in the country where I live.

The episiotomy was absolutely no trouble at all (apart from when I tried to have sex - thatbhurt for about ten months post birth but we weren't doing it all that often anyway...). No pain at all, although the first pee was a bit stingy!

GrumpySausage · 03/02/2018 15:53

I had DS at 11 at night and was home by 1pm the following day. It was only as long as that as they took ages to discharge us, no medical reason.

StarDanced · 03/02/2018 15:53

I had a large episiotomy with ds. I stayed in 2 nights but that was due to ds not feeding well and it being my first baby. The episiotomy wasn't considered when discussing when to go home.

DiploCat1 · 03/02/2018 15:54

No extra nights for me either, London hospital.

Chienrouge · 03/02/2018 15:55

I had one and was discharged 4 hours after the birth.

FeatheredTail · 03/02/2018 15:59

Fingers crossed baby turns properly! I had a back to back OT delivery with forceps and epi - gave birth at 4:30pm and left 4pm the next day.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 03/02/2018 16:00

No extra time in hospital due to episiotomy. Had to spend another night in a few days later due to the stitches bursting though.

MrsSpenserGregson · 03/02/2018 16:01

I had exactly the same scenario as you, OP, with my first baby. I had the episiotomy at 10.30pm, spend the night on the ward, went home the next day (had to wait until the afternoon as the paediatrician wanted to check the baby first, otherwise would have been able to go sooner).

MrsSpenserGregson · 03/02/2018 16:02

Oh, I'm in the most eastern part of the South West if that helps!

pinkpanther84 · 03/02/2018 16:17

I had an episiotomy with my first, she was born at night but I stayed in the next night too, not because of the episiotomy but because of feeding issues. I think if the feeding had been fine we could have gone home the same day x

slightlybefuddledlibrarian · 03/02/2018 16:22

If it’s just a straightforward episiotomy I don’t think it’s any different. I had to stay in for five days after my back to back birth though - he basically fought his way out and mullered me. I had five days of bizarre physio (some sort of ultrasound therapy - that could be the wrong word - I wasn’t entirely together! - with an iced wand thing amongst other stuff) to try and reduce swelling.

AllGone · 03/02/2018 16:25

I stayed in hospital about 36 hours after DS1 was born but that was because my waters had broken more than 24 hours before he was born, not because of the episiotomy as far as I'm aware.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 03/02/2018 16:28

I had episiotomy at 2am I was out by 2pm the following day

vics26 · 03/02/2018 21:20

I had a back to back 10lb7 baby and no episiotomy or tear although he was my third, and all three were big. back to back doesn't always mean you'll have an episiotomy. Get crawling around on all fours to try and get that little monkey to turn x

SpottyBrolly · 03/02/2018 21:32

Thanks all good to know a stay in hospital is unlikely and thanks for the top tip vics26.Smile

Overnight but I think that was because I'd needed an antibiotic drip. I felt fine though, just sore. Went on a train with baby after four days.
