Surprise breech presentation

40+3 today and just got home from the andu after being sent up with high blood pressure.

While I was there I was examined and given a stretch and sweep only to discover that baby is breech and not head down as we thought.

Baby was breech for a long time but then after 36 weeks community midwife has noted head down(ceph) ever since. I'm not convinced he ever was as movements have always been felt in the same place and I never felt a big turn.

I'm going back in in the morning to see if they can turn him (if it's even an option) and then to decide a plan from there as I'm now overdue.

Does anybody else have an experiences like this? With ecv at term, natural breech birth or c section for breech presentation?

We're feeling quite overwhelmed at the moment and I'm just trying to get my head round this

I had the same. They tried to turn her but couldn’t. After speaking to the consultant about the risks of a breech birth, I had an Elective C Section. No regrets at all.

My understanding is that the later you are into your pregnancy, the less the likelihood of turning due to baby being bigger and having less space to turn.

I had a similar run up but actually went into labour at 40+3 waters broke and by the next day was 7cms and they discovered baby was breech (and had been the whole time she was well and truly wedged in my ribs!) I ended up having an emergency section which was all absolutely fine and was just glad to get her out! So this time round we have had a lot more discussions about possible breech options (I am going for presentation scan soon to double check but all seems heads down this time!) anyways my husband is a doctor and his good friend is an obstetrics registrar we talked about ECV but decided we would not have gone for it as I don't think success rate is that high I would think at your stage even less so. They wouldn't have offered it with first pregnancy as I had an anterior placenta and risk of placental abruption is much higher, do you know where your placenta is? Honestly if I had been told at your point I would have chosen an elective section and if I had a breech baby I would do the same this time but that's just me purely because I would feel it's obviously something physiological with me that makes them breech! I am pretty sure midwives have to be trained or have a decent amount of experience for a breech vaginal birth which they didn't have at my smaller district hospital so wasn't even really an option. Also my daughter was well and truly stuck in my ribs and pelvis was empty so wouldn't have had any chance of natural delivery so I think there are a lot of things that will depend what they choose to offer you.

I will just say I am going for a VBAC this time but a section even emergency was absolutely fine so don't worry if that is what they offer you!

Yes breech here too, but undiagnosed until 9cm.
Had a section, was fine, wish I had known before though.

A relative had successful EVC at post 37 weeks but it wasn’t her first so I think odds were in her favour.

Good luck tomorrow

I have a natural breech birth (frank presentation) and it was fine.

DSis had a failed ECV close to term, and ended up with an elective section with complications/infection afterwards. We're fairly convinced that the ECV caused a lot of bruising that led to the infection afterwards. Its very unlikely to work at this late stage. Just go straight for the section and don't look back!
