coccyx pain/coccydinia following childbirth...anyone??

I've seen a couple of threads about this, but nothing for a year or so, so just wondered if there's anyone out there experiencing the same discomfort as me following the birth of my ds nearly a year ago.

He was my second child, very straight forward delivery, so intervention. It started when I sat breastfeeding him - pain in the coccyx area. So went to GP and after 3 visits he eventually diagnosed coccydinia, which is inflammation of the coccyx. Can be brought on by fall or childbirth. Of course, I've googled this and found all sorts of hideous stories - but would love to hear from any of you who've experienced/are living with this now and how you're coping or treating it.

I generally try to sit forwards all the time, which is better posture than I'm used to anyway, on my sit bones, and then it doesn't hurt. It's only when I'm actually sitting on it. I'm concerned that it may be broken or dislocated in some way, but can't get an xray on the NHS. Considering going private.

Any suggestions welcome!

I have a bad coccyx from many falls from horses, after DS was born it made it really painful again. I found sitting on a ring cushion helped, but I didn't see anyone about mine. Taking it easier and don't try and work through the pain, try and rest it does seem to help it settle down.

on the other hand, sometimes a hard chair makes mine feel better, rather than a sofa/armchair.

Thanks Quootiepie. I might try one of these cushions, heard a lot of good things about them. It'll be like the first few days after childbirth again! I'm sure DH and DD will find that hilarious!

Hello, no advice but it sounds as though I have the same thing brought on by dd's birth a year ago. Still hurts to stand up from sitting down etc, I keep hoping it will just go away :-). Would be interested to hear any 'cures'! My ikea sofa is now the most UNcomfortable place to be. Sitting leaning forward helps me too.

I have to brace myself for the pain when I get up from a chair. it feels bruised and painful

Osteopathy didn't work for me

Has anyone found a cure we can use?

I've just been to my doc again this morning about this and he's referred me privately as NHS won't xray the area. I really want to get a conclusive diagnosis before looking into my treatment options. All the treatments for this condition aren't pleasant though - steroid injections, internal manipulation of the coccyx. Grim! But to be honest I'll do these if it means I'll be back to normal and pain-free.

Hoping he'll say it's just bruised and will heal over time....

Thanks for all your postings - good to know I'm not on my own with my nether region issues!

By the way, the website coccyx.org has loads of info about coccydynia. Some of it a bit scary, but very informative nevertheless.

Hey MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo - notice you live in Bromley. So do I! One DD 4yrs in June and DS 1yr in May. DD goes to Raglan pre-school. Are you around this area??

Hello Loveverona - I may be living a bit nearer you soon. I am househunting at the moment. My DH used to work just by Raglan School in a printing firm - it's now flats.

But if you want to meet up in Bromley, we can arrange a coffee morning!

I had this too, got referred to physio. Was quite painful, had about 6 sessions where they manipulated it back into place (basically she massaged it back into place over a 3 month period, but it felt really bruised the whole time.)

Still notice it when I'm in the bath and lying back- but doesn't hurt otherwise and even when in the bath only aware of it rather than it hurting, ifyswim

Pain went away when ds was about 8 months.

Sis also had this, but much worse. Her gp referred her on NHS for acupuncture which helped enormously.

Hope yours gets better.

loveverona · 20/04/2007 16:06

Hey Tatat, thanks for this. I really don't want to go down the 'invasive' treatment route, iyswim. So to know about external massage and acupuncture is handy. I'd heard that the latter can be very effective. It's actually a lot better today....

Just wanted to say, Ouchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I sympathise big time with you all. I suffer with this but ONLY through my pregnancy. It started at about 34 weeks with ds and then at about 25 weeks with dd and I am now 36 weeks pg with no.3 and it started about 20 weeks this time. It is horrendous, I was nearly in tears earlier after an hour in the car. The ring cushion does help me but not sitting down is the best thing, not that easy all day at 36 weeks pg. However for me my cure has been childbirth? Gone as soon as baby leaves body? Having read his thread I hope I haven't pushed it too far with no.3. Eeeeeeek.

I really hope you find something that can help, it is horrible.
