How quick home after csection?

loopyredangel · 06/04/2007 20:47

Hi I will be having a csection in November because of my dodgy pelvis, this will be my second baby. How long was your stay second time around with a c-section? I just want to get back home and be with my family.

It will depend on how the operation goes. When I had mine an emergency section, some other women were discharged after 2 days. I had 2 other little ones at home and knew I would get more rest in hospital so stayed for 5 days. If there are no complications they seem pretty keen to discharge you ASAP, so you will probably find it is pretty much your call.

gigglinggoblin · 06/04/2007 20:56

i was in for 3 days, but also had emergency section. i was desperate to get home but that was absolute minimum they would allow. maybe depends on hospital partly, most things seem to!

Nip · 06/04/2007 20:58

i had DS at 1.10am on the friday morning and was home by sunday afternoon - this was an emergency c-section however

coleyboy · 06/04/2007 21:06

Had my ds1 by csection at 6am on a Sunday, and was at home for lunch on the Monday.

I drunk a shed load of water once back on the ward, as they won't remove the catheter until your wee looks a healthy colour. So that was removed Sunday afternoon. Also, once that is taken out you can get mobile - which is great for recovery. I got up straight away and started to walk (or should I say shuffle!!) about.

Then I asked them to take the canular (sp??) out of the back of my hand that evening as it was getting caught and pulling (and by then I was no longer on a drip). The hospital wanted to keep it in incase of an emergency, but I said I wanted it out and if there was a problem they can just put a new one in.

On the Monday morning the MW asked when I had thought about leaving, and I said I wanted to go today. She said as long as I and baby were found to be ok, that would be fine.

I know they weren't short of beds, so I really don't think I was being rushed out, and I was genuinely gagging to get home.

formy second - 5 days but dd2 had jaundice and so I suspect they kept us in so they could put her under lights. Third section 2 weeks ago - section 9am fri morning and then home sunday lunch.

sandcastles · 09/04/2007 08:10

Wednesday - Monday. But that was partly as my BP wouldn't go down (pre eclampsia).

Klaw · 09/04/2007 11:41

loopyredangel, can I be nosy and ask what is wrong with your pelvis?

I know there are issues over getting out of hospital to get back to family and away from MRSA etc, but just remember that you will be having MAJOR abdominal surgery.

I am very wary of CS patients being allowed home so early but I understand the reasons why you would want to. Make sure that you have organised for friends and relatives to come in daily for as long as possible (weeks) to do chores and pay attention to older child for you while you recover. You and baby will need time to bond so visitors should not expect to spend loads of time with baby, if any!

grouchyoscar · 09/04/2007 12:01

A friend who is a student midwife has said the local hospital are going to make it standard practice for hospitalization post c section to be 36 hours!

WTF it's MAJOR surgery. I think it's a recipie for disaster tbh

eidsvold · 09/04/2007 23:19

my consultant said he found it better to get women home after about 3 days rather than have them laying about in hospital - lead to complications. At least at home they are more mobile.

I am just 2 weeks post surgery and feel fine. My wound has healed nicely. There is no pain, stitches all dissolved and I am able to do most things around the house. I am not lifting heavy things but other than that - why do I need to be laying around all the time. I have two other children to consider.

I also found I got more quality rest at home than in hospital ward where babies were crying all night, visitors crowded into bedsides being very loud and disturbing. At home I am able to rest during the day for a number of hours and get decent sleep at night even though my baby is waking a few times in the night. No way I got that sort of rest in hospital.

I am lucky - this time I have had dh home for two weeks but he has gone back to work today. As it is school holidays - don't need to go out for the next four days but next week - back into our usual busy life.

eidsvold · 09/04/2007 23:21

it is also an ideal world where people have family and friends to call on for extended lengths of time.

For dd2 - my husband started a new job - the day after she was born by c-section.

Thankfully my sil could look after dd1 whilst I was in hospital BUT once I came out - I had no one to help me out - SIL had to go home after that - lived a distance from us. I just had to take it easy when I got home as best I could with a 2 1/2 yo who has special needs and a newborn.

Aloha · 09/04/2007 23:24

Had dd by caesarean on the morning, stayed that night and the next night, and went home the following morning. So two days and two nights. I was perfectly capable of going home on the second day though, and as far as I care at this stage (dd is two) I wish I had.
As for getting more rest in hospital, hmm! With the noise, the lights and the narrow bed I was completely shattered and desperate to go home for some sleep.

Aloha · 09/04/2007 23:25

Oh and no question of 'being allowed'! Hospitals aren't prisons. I told them I was leaving that morning, that my dh was on his way to collect me and if the paediatrician wanted to check dd, he would have to come round before 11am.

loopyredangel · 10/04/2007 22:07

I had SPD quite severely with DS, had xray when he was 10 months old to discover the gap was quite large, and there was quite severe wear and tear on my pelvis.

Hi Loopyredangel,

I do hope that SPD isn't too bad for you this time.

Have you seen this ? It's quite comprehensive about SPD and also advises that a CS is not necessarily best for SPD. What is important to you? Would you prefer to have a VB or a CS? Have you asked and got enough answers about your second birth? If you are perfectly happy to be having a CS, that's fine but if you're not then you've still got till November to do some more research and make your own informed decisions. I've no experience on how the wear and tear affects things but I assume SPD is more likely this time around perhaps?

There is some good info in there about coping with SPD. I hope that you find it beneficial.

SPD is very frustrating and extremely painful but looking at it differently it's good to know that your body is so good at preparing for birth, too good! I sometimes wish that evolution could have figured this out and only do the relaxing of the pelvis a week before labour!

ArcticRoll · 11/04/2007 11:46

With second elective cs I was in for three days.
Agree that you get more rest at home in noisy ward and no help with baby at night.
However it's important that they monitor blood pressure ec post operation.

loopyredangel · 12/04/2007 11:27

Thanks for the support everyone, thanks for the info klaw - have been given advice from my pain consultant who showed me the xray - the damage to my pelvis is quite severe, and won't withstand a VB. My last birth failed at the first stage also, and they put this down to the damage to my pelvis - after 29 and a half hours he just wasn't coming out. DS was a big baby,10lb 9.5oz so they are being extra cautious this time around. DOn't want to risk anymore damage to pelvis.

hi i had my 4th c section 9 months ago and i was home within 48 hours despite needing 6 pints of blood and 4 pints of plasma!!

fifisworld · 13/04/2007 11:22

I had emergency cs At 1.30am sat morning, came home on the sunday night about 7pm. I hate hospitals and got about 2 hours sleep the whole time i was there,it was awful so i begged to come home and they reluctantly let me.
Going to do the same next time as well.
