Oh WHY did I agree to induction on Sunday?

I'm scared and worried that me and my baby will have a horrible time and it won't have been necessary in the first place.
I'll be 11 days overdue and they want me in at 9.30am. Couldn't have me in for monitoring or induction on Monday / Tuesday because they're "fully booked" and although midwife was sympathetic i can't help feeling this is all happening at the convenience of the hospital and not taking in to account mine and my baby's wellbeing. I guess it's too late to back out now and even if i did want to I don't think DH will be very supportive.
My due date by LMP was 3rd April but then they changed it to 28th March at 12 week scan and all through the pregnancy I've been scared that this is how it would end. DS was 6 days late but I went in to labour on my own so I don't have a "history" of being very overdue / induction.

You don't HAVE to go in - can't you wait another few days?

don;t go in ! tell them you would like to wait for 42 weeks.....go by your dates, you know when your period was !!

DH should support you, there is no indication that the baby is in any danger, i take it?

have you had a sweep? is your cervix ready for induction?

You can cancel it - it's not their decision.

I say, don't show up. If you're not there, they can't do it.

blissie - I just went 15 days over with my DS3. I would have had a sweep, but was really keen to avoid induction as long as the baby and I were both healthy. He popped out in less than an hour when he was ready ! They can't make you ahve an induction, although I too felt a bit bullied in that direction. Good luck !

cancel it if you want to, of course, but just to say that i had an induction and it was fine, fine, fine. nothing to worry about. sore, but not unbearably and baby and mother were both healthy.

ahh poor you, if you really don't want to be induced on sunday surely you don't have to go. But to reassure about induction, my consultant said he induces all babies not arrived by due date and with proper pain relief there was no need to fear extra trauma to mum or babe.
My ds was 2 weeks+ overdue, 9lb 8 and arrived needing a haircut after his extended stay inside! I however have the worst stretchmarks my midwife ever saw! They came in those last 2 weeks despite 40 weeks intensive oiling and creaming.

I cancelled my induction at 42wks scan (40+5 LMP), had a successful sweep instead and went into labour that night (but wouldn't bother with sweep now that I've got hindsight and more information).

If I was you, I'd call and cancel induction, tell them that they need to recognise your lmp date and that you would agree to Expectant Management only therafter!

It would appear from the anecdotes I've heard that induction seems to 'work' well ONLY when labour was beginning anyway. If signs are not favourable inductions CAN lead to a difficult experience. Being overdue by arbitrary dates is NOT a valid medical reason for induction. PE, for example, is.

the WHO states a full term pregnancy can be between 37 - 42 weeks, not bang on 40 weeks

only 5 % of babies arrive on their EDD.....the vast majority don;t

i would be hesitant of being induced simply because the law of averages said i had a 28 day cycle, conceived on such a date, therefore need to have the baby on such a date....

if your body is not ready for induction, then it takes longer and it is more painful, and yes, of course, you can have pain relief..but what if you don;t want a medicalised birth?

sorry, but i find that rationale for induction hard to understand....

not saying that i am more learned than your consultant, but seems to be common sense that not every woman will deliver on her estimated due date

Mine of course is neither blythe nor good (definitely bonny- blue eyes and blonde curls), I'll get back to you about the gay. In maybe 12 years time or so.

yes i was suprised by the consultant, but he just said that babies not born early would be induced on due date. He seemed confident it's best to 'get them out' and it was less risky than 'leaving them in'. Maybe because I had one overdue birth already and I have an umbilical hernia he wants to prepare me for early induction but he actually said "babies must be out on due date!"

He probably has a holiday booked and wants his caseload clear.

erm itchy...your consult sounds of the old school....the best place for a baby is in utero until they are ready to be born UNLESS there are indications that they are not happy in there...and with monitoring, it is often clear which babies need to be induced, and which are happy in utero

sounds like he would also whip you into theatre for a c.s at the first sign of your labour not going the way he felt it ought to !

Well - I had a sweep yesterday and my cervix was 1-2cm dilated and the midwife could feel baby's head so it seems baby is definitely getting ready to go. I think that's why I said yes to the induction cos I felt really positive that the sweep would get things moving and that I would deliver by Sunday anyway. However, i'm still here and pregnant and feeling no different apart from damned uncomfortable!

I would like to give birth without pain relief this time as I had a bad experience last time with an epidural but I worry that I won't be able to handle being put on a drip without anything. I know i should be strong and say No to induction but it's hard when DH doesn't really see it my way and I'm feeling kind of vulnerable anyway. Also it being Easter i can't now speak to my midwife who knows me and my background.

oh, bless you....you never know, baby might come tonight !! can you delay by asking for another sweep later in the week...it is better for you to go into labour being comfortable with the process,rather than being swept along

pre-eclampsia and failure to grow in uterus (he weighed just over 5lbs).

None of my others were induced, ds3 came the day before -phew! Not that its a bad thing, i'm just not keen on hospitals.

Will they give you a drip? My uterus, apaprenlty, was 'unripe' with a best estimate by the MW of either a 5 day wait or mroe likely failed induction and c-section; in fact, after 3 pessaries he was born the next day.

I was in exacly the same position at Easter 4 years ago. Went along with induction though. Fast and furious,as they say.
I refused to be induced with next PG, & dd was born the day after they wanted to induce me anyway.
