Hospital clothes for baby

NewMumSoon · 02/09/2017 21:01

Due to have my first baby in November and thinking about what clothes I might need to take to the hospital for baby.

I know a few short sleeved and a few long sleeved vests but what size?! There is newborn, up to 1 month and 0-3 months.

Also a couple of hats, socks, blankets.

Grateful for any advice :)

Mine is due in October op. I've packed 3 sleepsuits , 3 short sleeved vests , a cardigan , and a hat. They're in newborn size because my previous DC were born around the 7lb mark. I know some like to skip the newborn size though as their babies are bigger.

I've also packed a blanket because hospitals sometimes don't have enough to go round.

Bobbiepin · 02/09/2017 21:07

If baby is due in November don't bother with socks, get sleep suits with feet. Last thing you need is socks falling off when its that cold.

Fandabidozy · 02/09/2017 21:07

I took 3 babygrows with fold over scratch mitts in the sleeves, 3 short sleeved vests, a hat and a blanket to use in hospital and a cardigan to come home in.

I bought all newborn sized for mine but despite being 6lbs 15oz and 7lbs 2oz they both needed tiny baby for a few weeks!

Katescurios · 02/09/2017 21:08

I would go with newborn unless you have reason to expect a whopper. My LG was 8lb11oz and pretty long. Newborn fit her for 2 weeks. Even if the clothes are a little too big though they would be perfectly fine for the short duration and then you can change baby when you get home, or get someone to bring something in a better size later on.

toomuchhappyland · 02/09/2017 21:14

Depends on the brand. Next newborn are tiny and both my babies (8lb 14oz and 7lb 6oz) went straight into up to 1 month in those. John Lewis and Mothercare are more generous so newborn fitted fine.

I would pack about 5 each of sleeveless vests and sleep suits. Babies wear both in the early days. I found with both of mine I went through loads very quickly as they were both quite sicky babies right from birth. Then you need a hat, cardi for going home and blankets for on top of them for going home in the car seat. Don't bother with cute outfits, wrestling a newborn into one is the last thing you'll be in the mood for!

Thanks for the tips. No reason to expect a big baby, guess I just thought better to be a bit big than too small! I'm feel pretty clueless about everything! Confused

I'll get some newborn ones then I think, including ones with feet. M&S have some really cute ones.

Thanks everyone Smile

Asda's newborn/first size stuff tends to come up a little big. I've got a mix of mothercare and asda baby grows in my hospital bag. If baby is huge you'll be able to make do and send DP out to buy more.

ChickenBhuna · 02/09/2017 21:45

You'll pick up the practical stuff in no time op. Love and patience are the most important things really , and those things are instinctive.

Good luck with everything Smile

I agree with PPs and say get newborn size. But watch what brand you get... I found that the cheaper brands (e.g.) Asda, Matalan, Tesco etc.. were smaller than the slightly more expensive brands (e.g.) Next, Mothercare, M&S etc...

My DS was 7lb8oz so a fairly average size and the gorgeous sleepsuits in Newborn size from Next etc didn't for for weeks! But the ones from Asda fitted perfectly.

MummyMrsMe · 03/09/2017 20:34

*fit

Have a mix of newborn and 0-3 month stuff at home, just in case. DD and DS were both 9lb babies, DD fit in newborn size until she was 4wo, DS was too long for newborn size from the moment he was dressed! He was stretching the sleepsuit out even with his legs bent!

Because I'd already had one 'big' baby, I never believed that babies could be born too big for newborn size but I soon had that put right! 😂

As for the rest, have three of everything for that first day - DS peed over everything for his first two nappy changes until I got the hang of covering him back up after opening the nappy. Having a couple of pairs of scratch mitts is useful just in case their arms are too long for the fold over flaps (again, looking at you DS)

Good luck!

My babies were tiny!! Both 6lbs. Newborn swamped them for a few weeks, so tiny baby was out go-to size. I knew from growth scans with my second that I was expecting a small baby, so could buy tiny baby in advance - with my first, I had no idea she would be so tiddly, so we had to go home from the hospital via Asda to buy tiny baby as she looked like she was wearing a tent in newborn clothes!
but unless you have reason to expect a whopper or a tiny one, then I'd go with the average of 7-7.5lbs and get newborn Smile

60percentbanana · 03/09/2017 22:13

I've bought a couple of things in newborn for the hospital purely because they're so teeny and cute, but will buy most things in 0-3 size. Ds was 10lbs and fitted newborn stuff for a couple of weeks at best.

Stellato · 03/09/2017 22:20

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Newborns can't move much so it doesn't matter if their clothes are a bit too big. Just make sure you wash them beforehand, they put all sorts of nasty chemicals on clothes to protect them during shipping.

Don't bother with socks and scratch mitts though. They don't stay on.

Princesspinkgirl · 10/09/2017 20:46

Common sense here

Sleepsuits
Vests
Cardigan^coat
Hats

NEWBORN clothes go up to 10lb

Bluebellwoods123 · 10/09/2017 21:05

Take more clothes than you think you'll need, mine got through 5 baby grows and vests in first 12 hours and I had no spares left until my OH arrived in the evening with extras.
Very good advice from other threads was to put each outfit in a ziplock freezer bag with the size written on it because you're not the one who'll dress the baby. I also left the extras at home in labelled freezer bags so I could say to OH please bring the bag labelled large baby clothes. Good luck

MyDcAreMarvel · 10/09/2017 21:07

Your baby will not need any footless babygros. They are for summer only.

AgainstTheOddsNo2 · 10/09/2017 21:28

I expected baby to be big as last 1 was. Only took 0-3 months but was born at 8lb 1oz and clothes swamped him. If I did it again, and I won't be, I would pack a pack of newborns and a pack of 0-3

Emeraude · 11/09/2017 20:29

My baby was 9lbs 9oz but the best fit for her were the M&S up to 1 month clothes that said up to 9lbs. In fact she's only just growing out of them almost 4 weeks later at over 11lbs. I took a range of newborn, up to 1 month and 0-3. She ended up in some of the 0-3 (it was a long stay) with the sleeves rolled up too.

OrphanAccount · 11/09/2017 20:34

I had a few newborn things and some in size 0-3 months. However, DD was just over 6lbs full term and swam in even the newborn sleepsuits! DH was dispatched to Mothercare to get some Tiny Baby stuff and they fitted her perfectly for a month (she was slow to put on weight). I would pack mostly newborn things personally. They're unlikely to be too big unless your baby is over 10lbs.

Gothbaby · 12/09/2017 07:13

We bought up to 1 month stuff. . Then baby was 5.5lbs! Everything looked huge on her xxxx

BringMeTea123 · 12/09/2017 09:30

I wasn't expecting a big baby as I'm fairly small myself. Everyone guessed a 6lbs baby. 10 days overdue and he arrived a huge 8lbs 9oz 🙈 we had been out and brought newborn and they were a little tight on him. Safe to say they didn't last him long.

We had to stay overnight. From baby arriving we were in hospital 36 hours. I needed 4/5 sleepsuits. Couple of hats, some muslin cloths, we took long sleeve bodysuits and trousers/set. A cardigan and a coming home outfit. He was born mid October x
