Hospital bugs and giving birth/ postnatal care

Our local hospital RUH in Bath (where I have to go) has had some bugs recently - D & V I think - some wards are affected, others not - maternity was not the last time I heard. I am due next week and have a few thoughts:

  1. delivery - do I assume that everything is sterile or would you check that mw has squirted her hands etc or do you think she would get pissed off with me? - same goes for anyone else who comes in?

  2. Postnatal care - same as above really - what lengths would you go to - am planning to take own anti-bacterial wipes for toilet, taps, bath etc

  3. Food and drink - obvious really - would you eat the food or drink the water?? Planning on dh getting me some nice food and bringing it in - the food sin;t great there anyway.

Do you think I am being overly cautious or would you be the same? any other tips appreciated.

ps homebirth not an option unless we leave it too late and really not keen on the idea!

I had my DS in RUH 12 year ago and it was filthy then so I complained.

Personally, I wouldn't care less what anyone else thought or did and would be completely neurotic! You and your baby are most important here, so take all precautions you can.

Food was cr*p 12 years ago - I survived on a chocolate cake and bowl of fruit bought in to me by a lovely friend who'd had her baby a month previously.

I felt exactly the same as you when I had dd2 last year (different hospital though)

I took loads of packs of anti-bacterial wipes and a couple of little bottles of that anti-bac hand stuff (a bit like the gel they have on the ward doors) and cleaned everything around me!!!

I had a real issue with going into the toilets and showers too and took spare 'toilet' slippers and kept them in a plastic bag!!!

Yes can go after 3 hours if normal delivery and transferring to community hosp - of going home think it is 6 hours. I am planning to escape asap - and have bought some milton wipes, hand spray stuff and all my own food and drink to take in! Taking no chances
