Skin to skin - with c-section?

After a traumatic birth with my dd, I held her for 2 minutes then was whisked away to surgery so felt I never got those lovely first moments to enjoy properly. Due to ongoing issuesI've been advised a c-section is my best option (21 weeks pg with second dc) and I'm just wondering is there still skin to skin and cuddles with a c-section or is it not possible? after the trauma of my first labour and delivery I'm really hoping this time will be less frightening. Xx

I had skin to skin with both DC in theatre after both csections (1 emcs and 1 elcs). My ELCS was almost 4 weeks ago and was an incredibly positive experience.

I highly recommend reading Caesarean Birth: A Positive Approach to Preparation and Recovery by Leigh East, it really helped me with any anxieties I had about my ELCS.

I got skin to skin with my second CS and it was a wonderful experience. I'd start asking now about how your midwife is able to support you in the theatre to achieve it. Ours were great, they quickly checked her over, wrapped her head in a bandage for warmth and then plopped her onto my chest under a space blanket. She snuggled straight into my neck and went back to sleep. I didn't let go for about 6hrs, it was perfect.

All the best with your birth. Flowers

I had a traumatic first delivery via c section and will need to have any subsequent children via c section. I was told that as long as all is well I can have skin to skin straight away in theatre as soon as she's delivered and while they have to cut the cord they can leave it long and me or my OH can do the cut near the baby's belly button if that's important to us. They also said that they can put music of my choice on and lower the curtain if I want to see her delivered. Basically to make it as calm as possible and how I want it.

I had skin to skin with my twins after a c-section. They stayed there through my recovery period and had their first feed too.

I have had two EMCS and had skin to skin with both. My first I had skinto skin just after and my second in recovery (as it was GA).

I had skin to skin immediately and for the whole time they finished the operation. Providing youre both well theres no reason why you can't.

Yes it is possible. In fact I had the most skin-skin contact with my c-section delivery and subsequently the best early bonding experience. My two previous deliveries (natural ) had been complicated and I didn't get initial skin to skin contact for a long while. As soon as baby was born via c-section and all was stable I had skin to skin and continued all the time in recovery and on the ward. He was also my easiest baby to breast feed. Flowers good luck

I'm having an ELCS in two weeks after a traumatic first birth. I was asked about skin to skin during the consultant appt at 36 weeks and it was written in the plan that I would like this.

Thank you so much everyone for taking the time to reply FlowersFlowers it's lovely to hear positive experiences and lots of skin to skin!! I will ask that it's part of the plan and it's good to hear hubby may be able to cut the cord as this was something he had wondered about.

Xxx

I would recommend taking your arms out of your theatre gown before your spinal so you are ready for skin to skin. No reason why you can't have this at section

EMCS 2 years ago, ELCS 6 weeks ago. No birth plan for either but DH given cord cutting option both times. With each I had skin to skin from theatre for as long as I wanted afterwards and was breastfeeding in recovery. Both were great births - enjoy!
