Breech babies

Has anyone had a breech delivery? Im 33 weeks and have just been in hospital for a few days in pre term labour, all stopped thankfully and am on rest and more rest now.

The consultant tried to get me to have a section as the baby was flexed breech. This little one does favour breech and although turns round still, he always goes back.

My last ds was breech quite a bit too in late pregnancy, but he preferred head down and came out that way.I have had 3 natural births at home and one section (first time round)

I just wanted to hear a real life birth story and see what kind of opposition you came up against in hospital, if any?

I am glad you and the baby are ok LG&T. I don't have any experience of breech deliveries but my DB is currently breech (I am 32 weeks pg), so I will follow this thread with interest.

largeginandtonic · 27/03/2007 10:56

Helooooo dejags, hope we get a happy story.

Anyone????

I delivered breech, but at 27wks, second twin so I don't think it counts.

Not sure what flexed breech means, mine was footling (both feet down, tucked under bottom)- where I think the risks are higher. The loverly little darling decided to poke 1 foot out to test the air and teh Doc had to rummage for the second (v v v painful, not recommended). I think there are also other risks like cord prolapse with footling breech.

Wouldn't recommend a vaginal delvery with footling breech for the reasons above. I think if this is your 4th vaginal delivery this would be an argument in your favour should you want to try and convince them fopr a vaginal delivery.

Good look, hope s/he turns, hope you carry on cooking him/her for for a bit longer and hope someone with a bit more experience will come along soon.

My DS2 was undiagnosed breech and I was already fully in labour when they discovered this.
I had to make a snap decision as they were pushing for a c-section (which I had in the end).
With hindsight, I know it is possible to naturally deliver a breech baby but the hospital were making it clear to me it would be a very traumatic option (he was almost 9lb so I was glad in the end).

Don't know enough about natural breech birth to advice, but I would imagine, especially if you have a pre-term birth, they will oppose it over fears for the baby's welfare, unless they have a midwive very skilled in breech delivery.

Good luck with everything x

I don't have an option. Breech babies (regardless of the type of breech presentation) are routinely delivered by CS in South Africa.

Trying to delivery a breech baby vaginally is considered medically negligent .

Although I am sure there are many, many women in rural areas who do so without incident everyday.

NormaStanleyfEGGcher · 27/03/2007 11:02

I haven't delivered breach, but I was born breach, as was my mother and her mother, so I did have a chat with the registrar last time I was pg. She said that they would allow normal delivery, but there are higher risks, only because if something does go wrong it is harder for them to deal with it.

There is some research out there (will see if I can dig up my link to it), and I had decided to go ahead with normal delivery.

DD turned anyway. I found the crawling around on all fours less than dignified, but it is meant to help.

Thank you madspringbunny (love the name) I too had twins at 29 weeks though and one was footling breech, i had a section and was given no option for a vaginal delivery. Glad you managed to do it naturally, must have made a huge difference, What with the treks up and down to special care!

I feel very full in my pelvic area - is this typical of breech or is it more likely that the baby has turned and is now becoming engaged?

hippmummy · 27/03/2007 11:04

And good luck with the little one staying in a bit longer!
My DS1 tried to come at 29 weeks but held on til 35 weeks in the end.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 27/03/2007 11:10

They didn't have much choice. I was 9-10cm before they decided to check if I was actually in labour (they had been denying it for 6hrs!!!), and DTD2 was transverse when I delivered DTD1, so there was a 50/50 chance of her flipping the right way. Needless to say she didn't hand has been a difficult bugger ever since!!!

And yes I wouldn't have wanted them on special care 20miles away after a cs, with no local family to offer lifts, and DP at work till 6pm every day, I can't imagine what that would have been like.

largeginandtonic · 27/03/2007 11:11

Thank you! Glad your LO turned, especially as he came out a whopping 9lb! My last was 9lb and shoulder dystocia which is making me panic a little more this time round.

Dejags i can feel the head easily up by my ribs, it is ballotable (i can put hands either side and kind of 'bat' him between them) If he gets hiccups i can feel them high up if he is breech, but head down they feel like they are in my pelvis.

Yours are ok now then bunny? Mine are 9 this year and i cant quite believe the little 2 and half pound scraps they once were!

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 27/03/2007 11:17

They are nearly 6 now.

Yeah they are great now, perfect - yours OK?. They were really lucky (I know they were actually 28weekers, but you know how insistent they are that scan dates are accurate...)

You wouldn'ty know they were prem if wasn't for the fact they don't have an ounce of fat on them. They are tall though, so they need 3-4ys clothing for the wasitband, and 5-6yrs for the length. Right PITA

largeginandtonic · 27/03/2007 11:22

LOL mine too!!! No fat at all, skinny little waists, a nightmare to find trousers to fit. Cant believe they came out of it unscathed really!

I had no choice, in Australia all breech bubs are born routinely by CS just like SA. My obstetrician had said it was considered negligent in the medical community here to do a vaginal delivery!! I also had rhesus factor issues big time so I guess it was the safest option but you wonder if the skill of delivering these bubs is being lost...

lulumama · 27/03/2007 14:02

OP posts:
lulumama · 27/03/2007 17:17

honey, if i lived nearer, i would be there like a shot, but am available for on line and email and text message doulaing ! xxx

NatalieJane · 27/03/2007 17:32

Oh my, how did I miss this?

LG&T, you had to go one better hey? Threats of pre-term labour and a breech... show off

Seriously, how are you? You have Lulu on demand, got to be a good sign!

I don't know a single thing about breech babies but I take it that they can't do that thing where they manually turn the baby? (Shall I put the Dunce hat on now?)

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 27/03/2007 17:44

External Vagination???

I guess they would try that later if necessary, but depends how baby is actually lying I think.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 27/03/2007 17:44

External cephalic vagination of course...

NatalieJane · 27/03/2007 17:50

Ah, that might be what I'm on about, sounds...unpleasent

largeginandtonic · 27/03/2007 17:52

External cephalic version.......

Pretty sure he would flip back again anyway, not opposed to him coming out breech, just opposed to enourmous 10lb breech baby

largeginandtonic · 27/03/2007 17:57
