LULUMAMA - Question for you re After Pains

Sorry to shout to get your attention!

My cousin gave birth yesterday after a two hour labour and is suffering horrendous after pains.

Can you explain what these are and why she would be getting them. It is her second child but I have never heard of this.

Am not Lulu obviously but afterpains are quite bad with second babies.
Especially when you feed as it contracts the uterus.
She can ask for some pain killers to help.

Nbg · 27/03/2007 07:58

Well when I say quite bad, enough to make you sit up

They should wear off soon.

I'd just never heard of this. Is it common and how long do they last for? Does everyone get them?

Yes its very common and yes I do think everyone gets them.

I dont know why its second plus babies but Lulu might be able to explain that.
As I said it can be worse when BF because of the uterus contracting.

I remember clenching my teeth together everytime ds sucked. I was just given paracetamol.
I think they were gone a couple of days after he was born but I didn't carry on BF either. But I'm sure they dont last too long.

tiredemma · 27/03/2007 08:04

Oh- they were almost as bad as labour itself.

WilkieBarEasterEgg · 27/03/2007 08:06

Whi is this not mentioned in any of the pregnancy books?

My cousin said hers are as bad as labour pains...!

Helloo!! what everyone else said ! all perfectly normal and ok, and will wear off...if she is breastfeeding, then that also releases the hormone that causes the uterus to contract back down to its pre baby size, so that can make a difference. ! it is often worse with second and subsequent babies, but nothing to worry about.....

paracetomal can help

things to watch out for that are not normal, is a tender tummy, suddenly passing more locia, clots and pain...can signal infection..

this all sounds like normal , and will wear off!

so much the books don;t tell you !!

cheritongirl · 27/03/2007 10:04

just to add that i had awful pains (like contractions) when bf for the first few days and about 5 days after birth i really thought i was in labour again (!!) they were so bad. Phoned the mw who said there was nothing to worry about but a different mw came a few days later and did check me for a thrombosis when i told her - although if i had had one i think it would have been a bit late by then.. Sorry not wanting to alarm you at all, the pains did go away although came back a few times in the following weeks.
All the best to your cousin and congrats!
