EDD tomorrow... I'm just having a moan really... but what is the point of saying "40 weeks"...

... if, from what I hear, it's much more usual for a first pregnancy to be over 40 weeks?

I mean, in France, iirc, your due date is given as 41 weeks. So why not in the UK? It just builds up false hope for those women whose babies take longer to "cook".

And that, by the sound of it, is the majority of first time pregnancies. Or so everyone, from mil to the checkout lady in the Asda today, tells me.

They could be wrong of course, and tomorrow I could go into labour spontaneously having so far had no BH contractions, no show, no - well no anything really, apart from his head engaging.

So why 40 weeks? What's the real reason behind it? Or am I wrong and 40 weeks really is the average even for a first pregnancy?

Hi Mossie, just looked at your profile and seen that you play D&D - me too! (Am new and being nosy trying to get to know people)

Hope baby doesn't keep you waiting too long but try to enjoy this last bit of your pregnancy - I went to 42 + 1 with my DS (who's now 4 months old) and I was grumpy as hell by the end, but now I miss being pregnant. Can't win.

Good luck!

Hi Olissa! It's the hobby that dare not speak its name! 2nd edition? Or those new fangled rules?

I was being a mardy miserable cow this morning actually, but a neighbour took me for a drive just now (so I could pick up some Gaviscon, how exciting) and I feel a bit more human.

I might even summon up the energy reserves to wash the dishes!

Lol, i noticed the D&D thing.. i'd play online and i went into labour just as i was finishing up a session with someone in New York at 3am in the morning, rofl.

Maybe you should try it.. sending you lots of good quick labour vibes!

Olissa · 27/03/2007 22:30

Depends who's running the game but we are mostly new-fangled at the moment.
Some of us are more resistant to change than others

Have just started playing again since having DS actually, he sits on my knee... we are introducing him to geekdom early, he is a 'geeklet' I guess.

Hope your heartburn is not too bad and that the phone stops ringing - everyone seems to think they'll be the person you forget to tell!

Mossie · 28/03/2007 08:21

Kaishay I've never played online! What web site is it? Who is DM or is it computer generated, more like WoW or something? Hey if it's going to send me into labour I'll deffo try it!

Olissa I think I'm one of those resistant to change people. Unfortunately it does mean that if I need any handbooks etc. I have to get them from ebay! How old is your ds?

My heartburn isn't too bad actually, not now lo's head is engaged, but I like to have a huge bottle of Gaviscon in the house just in case!

Feel a bit less of a moany cow today actually; I think now my EDD has been and gone without so much as a twinge, at least now I know I'm in for a wait. If that makes any sense.

Makes perfect sense to me!
DS is 4 months.

Mossie · 28/03/2007 16:28

Oh bless and you're already geeking him up! Who is it that you play with, and who is normally DM or do you take turns?

Well, I went for a walk up a hill to our local Spar for some milk and a birthday card for dh's Gran.

And now I'm knackered. It's only a ten minute walk usually, ffs!

But... no... nothing! No twinges, nothing.

I'm going to go and put tea on I think.

Mossie, I do sympathise. When I had ds, I actually went into labour on my due date (amazingly) - but when he was born, he was very wrinkly and his nails were quite long - both midwives said, "oooh, you must have been really overdue!" - well, no apparently not! But ds was obviously a little "overcooked"

Olissa · 28/03/2007 22:28

Hope you're resting now Mossie!

I play with DH (sounds dodgy doesn't it ) and three friends, and DM duty is kind of taken in turns - I'm back from next week after my 'maternity leave'...

Have you got a post-dates appt with the hospital soon then? (hoping you won't need it, obviously) I had one at 40 + 4 and then went another 11 days!

Mossie · 28/03/2007 23:14

Lol Miaou, hey he didn't know he was over cooking, bless him!!

Olissa I play with dh and two or three friends too. All blokes though, my best friend would play too but she lives in Birmingham, bit of a way to travel! Don't know why so few women play, seems a shame!

I've a mw appointment tomorrow but it's a bit complicated. I've chosen not to go to my local hospital and instead to the Women's Hospital in Liverpool, it's a bit further away but has a better reputation.

But I have to have my mw appointment locally. And the mw told me that they're not allowed to do sweeps on patients than anywhere other than the local hospital.

So frankly I don't even see the point of going to see the mw tomorrow; she's been a bit rubbish so far, well in comparison to the mws at the hospital who have all been great. And she can't give me a sweep, which is the only kind of inducement I don't mind having atm. So why bother?

I'll see if I can get her to refer me to the Women's for a sweep. Otherwise I'll call them myself tomorrow and ask what the next step is.

I'm not too bothered with the wait now, but I am getting a bit fed up of being phoned / texted / emailed all the time to be asked if I've gone into labour yet!!!

Its a message board one on a forum. Its losely based on Faerun/Baldurs Gate...etc and we have a chatroom we use for live action Roleplay.

We still use dice, but its not strict D&D rules, it'd get too complicated during fights, lol.

If you're interested, the web address is
forums.delphiforums.com/berbusk/start

the membership is free, although you can pay to upgrade if you want to.

I do D&D but i also do some based on X-men and one based on the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey.

I'm a proper RPG geek, lol. DS has had to learn to sit on my lap and keep his sticky mitts off my laptop so i can play while i have him with me.

Mossie · 28/03/2007 23:34

Anne McCaffrey! Many lost hours reading the ol' "Dragonshagger" books when I was a bit younger! Good heavens I practically lived on Pern!

I'll take a look at the forum... thanks!

Having said that I lose enough time on here already!
