Vbac chances?

Was induced with my LO simply because I was 'overdue' & had an emergency c-section due to heart rate dropping.

Now thinking about next baby. Would like a small age gap. My LO is 5 months so would like to try again this year.

I absolutely hated having a section & really struggled after with recovery & feeding. To have another would be my worst nightmare.

What are the chances of aVBAC with a small age gap of say 16-18 months? I know not everything goes to plan but interested to hear from those who have been successful?

The midwife told me to wait 18 months before trying again if I want a vbac, which really disheartened me :(

Hi there, I had an emergency c-section with my first too then had a vbac with my second just 17 months later. I had an epidural with my second which made her birth so much easier, and actually quite enjoyable once the pain relief had kicked in! I too struggled with recovery after my first. I don't remember any real concerns about my falling pregnant again so quickly, though it was a bit unexpected at the time! I seem to remember previously being advised to wait a bit though so maybe chat to your midwife/health visitor/GP again? There was no question from
the health professionals of an attempt at a vbac first and foremost with my second either and I wasn't particularly young - 38 at the time. Wishing you luck with everything Smile

That's so good to hear! Thank you.
I've not had a period yet so it may not actually work out how I want! But just trying to plan ahead. I know a lot of people had a good sexton experience but I really didn't.

Were you induced with your second? I went 2 weeks over with my LO that's why they induced me although I didn't really want that & didn't feel 'ready' if that makes sense, she weighed 7lb born.

No I wasn't induced, mine where all early (I have a third now too, also natural, but assisted, birth). I can't remember whether my periods had returned after my first either, if they had it wouldn't have been for long. There was never a question of attempting a natural birth with either of my other two though, it was only due to problems that I had an emergency one with my first. Take advice but try not to overthink/stress about it too much. As long as any others that you may have arrive safely, that's the main thing. I think very few people, relatively speaking, have the perfect birth! Smile

Do you mind me asking what hospital? I don't know a single person that's had a natural birth! It seems c-sections are the 'norm' at my local hospital, not sure why!

I was in our Women's and Children's hospital, I'm in Hull. Seems strange that a hospital would just mainly do caesareans though. Could you speak to your one of health advisors about it?

This website is very useful for you tho compare birth types at the maternity units near you: www.which.co.uk/birth-choice/units/search/

The VBAC success rate, planned CS rate and facility information helped us decide on location and birth method

I think it's great to try for a VBAC (I did too) but you have to be aware that most hospitals won't induce you. So if you go more than a certain number of days overdue it will be straight to a c-section (unless you refuse to do anything at all, I suppose) and try to wait it out. And there are quite a few other reasons why you might end up with an elective c-section anyway (breech baby, which is more common after a previous section), suspected size (my hospital not keen on VBAC once baby predicted to be 4.5kg or more). The threshold for going to an emergency c-section is also lower once you've had a previous section, because they really don't want your scar to rupture.

So I would say definitely aim for a VBAC, but be aware that it isn't all in your control. There are also MUCH worse things that can happen than having a second section, so I would try not to see it as a nightmare!

Hi I've just had a successful VBAC with DD2 after an EMCS with DD1 20 months earlier. I decided I didn't want to be induced because I felt like that would likely end up with another EMCS, so if it had come to that I would have had an ELCS. I agreed with my consultant that I would have sweeps from 38 weeks to try to avoid that scenario. I had one sweep and she was born 8 hours later! The recovery has been much easier, I don't know how I would have managed a caesarean wound and an excitable toddler, it would have been terrifying!

I had an EMCS late last year due to falling heart beat too and interested in seeing other replies here as I've just had a BFP. DS is nearly 8 months and I would love a VBAC if possible. My waters broke before 38 weeks which I think is earlier than an elective would be scheduled. Just adding I only had one period which came 2 weeks after DS started solids
