I had this at 20 weeks - my 34 week scan showed it had moved.
I think the statistics the MW quoted at the time were that this happened in 1 in 5 pregnancies and 95% of them sorted themselves out by 34ish weeks.

Thanks it's only alittle in the way so I'm very hopeful now thanks!

Well mine was completely covering "the exit", so it's looking even better

I had low lying placenta at 20 weeks and at my 34 week scan it hadn't moved. However then another scan at 36 weeks revealed that it was completely clear! It is frustrating because I felt (being a bit of a pessimist) that I had to plan for a c-section and got myself in a bit of stew about it. However as has been posted most do move - good luck!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 20/03/2007 09:51

mine moved, and it was huuuugge!!

Lizzylou · 20/03/2007 09:59

Mine moved, was gutted as was hoping for a c-section (huuge baby!)

If it's only a little bit in the way the odds of it moving a very high. I would try not to worry about it for now. However (and bearing in mind a recent thread about feelings of failure after c-section) why not make two birth plans: one for a HB and one for a CS. That way you will feel 'in control' whatever happens. Oh, and if you do have any bleeding (unlikely, but just in case) go straight to the hospital without passing 'go' or collecting £200.

FWIW, I had grade 4 placenta praevia with dd1 (totally covering exit, lots of bleeding, lots of time in hospital, quite stressful, etc. but fabulous planned CS at the end and a beautiful dd who had no ill-effects from it at all) and was also told my placenta was low at 20 weeks with dd2. By 34 weeks though it was completely clear and I went on to have a wonderful VBAC with no intervention etc etc etc. (Just to prove that either way is OK!)

Imagine placing a sticker near the hole of a balloon before you blow it up. Then blow it up.

The sticker is not near the hole anymore.

Most likely this is what will happen to your placenta as your womb expands.

I too had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks and thankfully as womb expanded my placenta moved away from the 'hole' (LOL) sufficiently.

Hopefully, yours will too.

been a few threads about this if you search...on the whole they move !

grade 1 and 2 can allow a vaginal birth, whereas grades 3 and 4 do not. due to the odds of a massive blood loss....

if it is only a little in the way, odds are it will move !

what Doualklaw says is a good description

BabyMadwithBump · 20/03/2007 18:12

Can they go from alittle in the way, to very in the way?

don;t think so ! the placenta can;t migrate down, back towards the cervical os, as the uterus grows up, AFAIK..check with the midwife..

I had a low lying placenta in my second pregnancy (this it apparently common post caesarean). And the sonographer explained the baloon theory to me as well. Notice when you blow up your baloon that the top stretches out first. So it isn't until later in pregnancy that the bnottom of the uterous stretches giving the placenta the appearance of moving. But, of course it doesn't really move as in slide around. It just appears to move relative to your cervix.

20 weeks is quite early. It usually moves out of the way.
