Induction horror

sweetchilli77 · 08/04/2017 09:07

Im being induced on the 18th due to GD and being on insulin. I will be 38+3 at that point.

The running theme seems to be they are horrid, days of labour of then which ends in an emcs.

Im not precious and expect it to be hard work but is being induced really so bad? Will i be hospital for days?

Good luck!! I was induced at 42 weeks - hadn't done any research so luckily didn't have horror stories to worry about! Pessary didn't work - did absolutely nothing so had the gel. Active labour started around 5 hours later with DS born almost 2 hours after that. Was dc2 though and I went from 4cm to fully dilated and needing to push in a very short space of time which I think takes longer with first. Hope all goes well and you have a positive experience Flowers

I was induced with DS1. The induction started at 2. pm they told me to go for a walk and me and DH made it as far as the hospital doors (few minutes walk from my bed) before my contractions started! DS1 born at 12.40 am with no intervention needed.

My induction labour was 100x better than my natural one.

Well...I lived to tell the tale :)
So i went in on the Monday and had my 1st propess, which didn't do nothing!, Tuesday, 2nd one inserted and again nothing! Zilch!

Was examined again by a doctor on the Wednesday who said she couldn't even bring my cervix forward to even and break my waters, she felt it was pointless going for the gel after both propess peccaries had failed. She said its toking like a C sec would be the only way.
Came to terms with a C sec and waited however it was busy in the delivery suit so would probably be Thursday.
In the mean the time a consultant came who gave me another examination, he was confident waters could be broke!!

SO....went down on Thursday and finally at 2.00pm i got my waters broke!
I was started on a sliding scale also due to my GD
I was left an hour to see how i progressed!,the syntocinon drip was then started and contractions where in full swing. Just me and gas and air.

was coping fairly well until that drip got cranked up more.I was then examined again at 8pm and was only 2cm.....The night midwife managed to attach a clip on babies head which allowed me to stand at the side of the bed. got an epidural later on however my contractions where just overriding it. I never knew you could have a failed epidural.

I was examined again and was still only 2cm!!!!, i just hadn't budged. Id been 12 hours at the same point. So at 0200 i was wheeled in for C.Sec.

A C Sec was strange, after going through all that but at least my baby was delivered safely .

Its not put me off at all, i just was favourable and with this being my 1st labour i wasn't expected an easy ride.

Now its time to enjoy my baby girl :)

Aw good on you my love. You're made of tough stuff xx

FanaticalFox · 19/04/2017 16:47

Might be a stupid question but do you have to have a catheter when you have an epidural?

sweetchilli77 · 19/04/2017 16:57

FanaticalFox Yes catheter inserted. It was welcomed too. One less thing to worry about for a few hours :)

I was induced at 38 weeks for GD (Metformin controlled). Not fun, but I wasn't expecting birth to be fun anyway!

DD was born 2.5 days later. The pessary and gel didn't do very much and things only got going when my waters were manually broken. My one recommendation is to get the epidural in before the drip goes up!

Otherwise all fine. It was quite a medical labour (on three drips by the end) but they lessened the epidural once I was at 10cm so I could feel the contractions to push. DD born vaginally no instruments, although I did tear.

Far worse than the labour was having to be on the postnatal ward for days afterwards whilst they checked blood sugar was ok to go home. If you can get your own room go for it!

Good luck!

Should have read to end of thread!

Congratulations! Now enjoy your baby :-)

FanaticalFox · 19/04/2017 17:23

Do you always have to have a catheter if you have an epidural? Whats it like when they take it out? Does it hurt/could there be complications etc?

Daisies123 · 19/04/2017 20:11

I think you do as you can't feel when you'd need to pee? I actually pulled mine out the first night on postnatal - didn't hurt at all just felt a bit weird as I didn't realise initially. Cord from bag was upside down so I flooded the bed and the floor. Oops...

Daisies123 · 19/04/2017 20:12

Pulled it out accidentally!

FanaticalFox · 19/04/2017 20:21

Haha ok can't be that bad then!

Daisies123 · 19/04/2017 22:33

I think there is a slightly higher infection risk - the woman in the next bed on postnatal was being daft and refusing to let the Maternity Assistant come and empty the bag as she had visitors there and didn't want to be disturbed. Apparently this was bad as it should have been emptied frequently. I got to hear the whole saga through the curtains!

But, if you think about it, it isn't in for very long after an epidural whereas an elderly person after an operation might have one in for ages!

FanaticalFox · 19/04/2017 23:04

Yeah its just something I've always had a bit of a fear of. I was a carer and i always thought catheters look painful upon removal etc.

funtimebobby · 23/04/2017 13:39

I was induced with 2nd, was worried for nothing. Got pessary in afternoon started contracting soon after. I found it more intense at the end but could have been as baby was back to back and bigger.

sparkleandsunshine · 24/04/2017 09:44

Well, mine was pretty bad, 3 months ago now.

Was induced a week early because of reduced movements... had one 24 hour pressure and nothing happened. Then got a 6 hour one and nothing happened, then got another 6 hour one and by then I was dilated 1cm. They said it was enough to break my waters.
Took me to delivery, broke my waters and put me on the Pitocin drip.
They said I should deliver within 12 hours to reduce the risk of infection.
I wasn't progressing and they put the drip up and up past the recommended amount to try and get things moving.
I had an epidural which only worked on the right side of my body so I was in agony on my left side.
20 hours later, I was screeching every time a contraction came round, I was being sick and they come in and tell me I'm only 4cm dilated and I have to have a csection.
Got my spinal and the pain relief was such a relief I felt like I was in heaven.
I lost too much blood but they sorted me out, the healing was fast and I got my baby.
I didn't get the natural delivery I wanted but my baby came out early for her safety and it wasn't that bad and I barely remember it now.
I promise, even if it goes the same as mine did, all you care about in the end is the baby.
And I didn't have to go through the "ring of fire" in the end haha

sparkleandsunshine · 24/04/2017 09:46

Also I had an epidural and did not have a catheter, I knew when I needed to pee every time but had to have a bedpan as they wouldn't let me up with the epidural in.
I did obviously have to have a catheter for the csection but they had already done the spinal so I didn't feel it go in and I was scared about it coming out but I didn't feel that either!

sparkleandsunshine · 24/04/2017 09:48

Just seen what happened to you! Looks like similar to me!
