done- i have three fab friends from college now training to be midwives.

is there a petition to pay nurses more????????????

nooka · 02/03/2007 21:19

Round where I work midwives are in huge shortage (central London). I can't see how a guarantee would work in practice as individual NHS trusts make the decisions on how many staff they require, and employ them directly. Would the training colleges be required to find jobs for their students? Obviously it is a waste if many more midwives are being trained than is required, but for most careers the risk lies with the individual.

Nooka,

The guarantee is working in Scotland. All nurses and midwives are guaranteeed a year's work afetr qualifying.

The problem is - if you don't get some work straight away, in 6 months time a new cohort will have qualified. Hospitals are more likely to take on the more recently qualified m/w, than one who has been out of practice for 6 months. Meaning you might never get a job! When I started training the government and press were bangin on about the huge shortage of midwives and how they were going to train more. My uni told us we were guaranteed a job. It now looks unlikely that I will get a job and I am very worried that I will NEVER be able to work as a m/w.
