there are loads of threads about these hospitals and various consultants - so have a dig in the archives.

Swimski - I had both mine at the Lansdell Suite and loved it. I used the private midwifery service but ended up with Eugene (a ghananian consultant with an unpronounceable surname) - who I really really liked. He's really calm, kind and sensible, which I needed both times round. I had an emergency c-section first and a planned one second - and all the staff were brilliant. Even the anaesthetists were divine as I was terrified of the epidural.

The Lansdell Suite is small but the rooms are a good size and clean. The delivery suite seemed fine to me, and although on MN you'll find a lot of people very anti St Thomas' (and I don't think I would have a baby there on the NHS, the general postnatal ward seemed pretty chaotic compared to the calm of the Lansdell), I never encountered a problem, and couldn't have been happier. In fact if I ever had number three, I'd plead with my husband to let me go back there, even though we now live in Warwickshire...

I am planning on having my baby at the Lansdell Suite in July. So whilst i have no experience of the unit yet, i am in the care of a fab consultant - Mr Con Kelleher. I was recommended to him by a friend who had both her children with him at the Lansdell Suite.
I was due to give birth at C&W but after my sisters horrible birth there switched hospitals.

I haven't given birth yet (6 more weeks) but am booked in at the Kensington Wing at C&W under the care of Keith Duncan. He is really great and I am very pleased with the care I'm receiving. The Kensington Wing only has 6 rooms though so if you are considering it at all then it's an idea to book quickly. I called at 5 weeks pregnant and got the last space available for April!

I've heard all kinds of bad stuff about C&W but it's all on the NHS side of things. Then again, I've heard a lot of bad stuff about giving birth on the NHS in general with the main complaint the aftercare and busy wards, etc.

Is St Mary's Lindo Wing an option for you? I think they have 14 rooms and are meant to be really good. Several of my friends had their babies there and were very pleased with the care throughout.

I'm with Keith Duncan as well. Just met him last week and got the last available bed in May with him, he seems very nice, although I thought the first appt would be more thorough, maybe it was just a general introduction. I heard C&W is more expensive than others, even Portland. St. Thomas I heard is like 1/2 the price -is that about right? I've been quoted around 10K for the hospital and doctors bills... A lot, but I don't know of any other options, I'm not from here. Any advice appreciated.

I am booked to have baby at lansdell suite with eugene oteng ntim like becadillo . He helped me when lost last baby at 21 weeks (this delivery was in SANDS suite - staff all fantastic)- and did all the test afterwass . And has been lovely/patient so far as I'm understandably a bit nervous to be pregnant again Cannot speak highly enough of him/the unit.

In terms of facilities Lansdell might not be as palatial as some - but clean/comfortable enough . Its also convenient - I dont know where you live but its very easy for me being accessible for antenatal from work and easy trip from home.

Hi amaza, me again, when I looked into it a couple of years back the charges for all the private wards of NHS hospitals were largely similar - some would charge more per night but less for your delivery and vice-versa. UNless something has radically changed I expect it is still the same. C&W was perfectly nice but not palatial and certainly not worth twice Tommy's!!

I'm just about to start trying again and am worried as everyone seems to have gotten the last space "for that month" but with due dates really early in the month! If I fall pg quickly again (within the 1st 3 months I think) my due date will be right at the end of the month. It's like signing up for schools. The world has gone mad!

amaza · 19/12/2007 09:32

I know, it's insane... People are signing up before they are even pregnant... Most consultants are with several hospitals though, even if they are not available with one, they are ok with others. Portland seems to be ok with beds. I'm not worried about what's palatial, just want to make sure I get the best possible ObGyn with all resources and quick decisions, if that makes sense... Called St. Thomas - seems their rates have gone up to pretty much the same as C&W... Agh, it's all so confusing...
