My son was back to back and it was extremely painful. As I understand it with a back to back baby their head isn't in the right place to push against the cervix to get it to dilate.

I had the complication of a macrosomic baby too (11lb 9oz) which probably made my pain worse.

I don't believe there is any extra risk for you or the baby though. In the end I had an epidural and it was HEAVEN.

Good luck xx

I've had two b2b babies. One with epidural, one with gas and air. Highly recommend the epidural. Don't worry, you'll be fine. Listen to the midwife and if it's too painful ask for help. Wishing you lots of luck. Many people have a b2b baby and then go on to willingly have another pregnancy, so it can't be that bad Smile

DD was back to back and it was fine. It was painful, obviously. But childbirth does tend to be painful Wink

I had gas and air and was only in labour for six hours altogether, 40 minutes of that was pushing.

i only realised that DC2 and DC3 were back to back after the third was born and it dawned on me that looking up at me = back to back. d'uh! no-one really mentioned it.

i had gas and air and a water birth for both. 2 was ok, 3 was painful but he was 8lb 3oz and 2 was a very understanding 7lb 8oz!

neither seemed particularly worse than my first...i wouldn't worry if I were you. i think the idea that they're massively painful is a bit over-egged... (goes to sit in a cupboard while the pitchforks are gathered)

DS was back to back. As with PP the early labour pains were incredibly intense and unbearable, which took me by surprise. They didn't actually get much worse, if anything the later stages were better because I was finally allowed access to some pain relief other than paracetamol (gas and air). I pleaded for an epidural but apparently the anaesthetist was busy. I think I was just too far gone by that point and I was in too much of a state to have that explained to me. I ended up having a spinal block after he was born anyway because I tore badly :/

On a more positive note, prior to having him I read that b2b labours were often longer. Mine was 8h from waters breaking to him being born, and only 1.5h of "active labour". Thank God.

Mine was back to back she turned that way during labour I had an epidural so most of my labour was great Grin she is also a chunky monkey which with her position meant she got stuck at the end so I had an assisted forcep delivery

BuzzoffBoob · 28/12/2016 22:35

My DD was back to back. I felt every contraction in my back. I have heard this is more painful but have nothing to compare it to! I managed just on gas and air (although I did want some pain relief, just wasn't given any).

BuzzoffBoob · 28/12/2016 22:36

And my labour was under four hours. Would have been quicker but she got stuck and I had to have a ventouse birth.

wineusuallyhelps · 28/12/2016 22:47

I didn't know one of mine was back to back till he came out (still puzzles me why no one noticed). He was 9lb 9.5oz and I only had gas and air (and I am a wimp). Second degree tear but all healed fine. Better than my previous episiotomy.

chipsandchilli · 31/12/2016 23:19

I have had 3 labour's, 1&3 back to back.

1st one was awful, was sent home 3 times as apparently i wasn't in labour, wasn't dilated, nothing going on front end, go home this is the part of labour no one warns you about, take some paracetamol. Went into labour around midnight, was finally admitted around 9am and delivered at 11am. Luckily the shifts changed at 8am and the new midwife was horrified i had trailed backwards and forwards and had no pain relief, was too late for anything other than pethadine and gas an air. Labour was mostly done in the house in agony thinking my arse was going to explode.

2nd, straightforward, the right way, walk in the park compared to 1st

3rd one, knew instantly i was back to back when i went into labour, hospital tried sending me home, i wasn't in labour, same as the first, i said no im back to back im staying here.

You are in a much better position as you know you are back to back so can prepare for it, don't let them send you home and you will be able to get pain relief. It's more or less what everyone else has said, be prepared for the pain to be in your back and bum. You will push for ages and it feels and looks like nothing is happening but it is.

I think its shocking how some back to back labours are send home as nothings happening up front, i know a lady who was back to back, same hospital, almost identical to my first and she delivered her 1st child at home in the bath as nothing was happening up front so she couldn't be in labour...go home.

chipsandchilli · 31/12/2016 23:22

Labours were..
1st 12 hrs
2nd 4hrs
3rd 13hrs

Princesspinkgirl · 31/12/2016 23:26

My DS1 was back to back. Everything was fine, just meant a long labour and a lot of the pain was in my back. I had a tens which helped a bit with the early stages. Apparently it's more common nowadays as so many people do jobs where they sit down all day.
