I'm still at work, please say this isn't labour!

Looking for some reassurance please.

I am 38+1, I'm working in an office and my last day of work is tomorrow. I'm paranoid that baby might be arriving before her due date, which is the 14th. This is my first.
Symptoms - explosive diarrhoea this morning (sorry if tmi), twingy period like pains on and off and baby has been moving a lot less in the last 48 hours.
BUT...she is still moving/kicking, the bump still seems very "high" and I've had no show or leaking waters.

So please can someone tell me it's just my body practising and I'm not about to go into full blown labour in the tea room, cos I am really getting scared sat here at my desk!!!

Wish I was local to you Malta! I am a Cornish girl(and always will be) Stupidly moved away to go to uni , met DH and have yet to return to live. Now I've got kids I wish I was there even more. So homesick!!!!!Are you going to treliske for the big event or to the unit - is it at Penrice?

lulumama · 01/02/2007 13:46

snoooooooort at meowmix;s colleague

yeah, go home , before you cause an industrial accident..and keep us posted !

harpsichordcarrier · 01/02/2007 13:47

malta - just time the twinges. if they are getting stronger and more regular, then I would say you are in established labour.
until then, it sounds like you are "nearly there" and possibly in early labour
but early labour can go on and on and on

Blu · 01/02/2007 13:47

I wouldn't go home if you feel ok! Work and the prospect of presents is a good distraction.

And your waters are just as likey to start leaking very very slowly, or wait until you are 7cm, as cause a water featue in the office! especially if you have had no show.

Isn't it rare for breaking waters to be the first sign of real labour?

Drama queens!

maltatheterrible · 01/02/2007 13:47

spudmasher - yep, Penrice hopefully. Lovely little midwife unit with cushty waterbath etc and they let you out in 6 hours if all is OK.
I have been so lucky with an easy pregnancy, I'm just praying the birth experience follows suit

Maybe your colleagues could get you one of these to avoid any mishaps

lulumama · 01/02/2007 13:50

c'mo blu !! her last day tomorrow ! let her leave with a modicum of hysteria !

around 20 % of labours start with waters going,,,more often they go in labour......

maltatheterrible · 01/02/2007 13:51

rofl..betty that is not helpful, my pelvic floor may give way and I won't be able to tell what kind of fluid I'm leaking!

I've heard nothing but praise for Penrice Malta. Loads of my friends have had their babies there and talk very positively of it. Good luck to you Cornish sister!! Let us know how you get on!! I will be watching to see what happens! I'd better do some work.....

spudmasher · 01/02/2007 13:54

lol betty

BettySpaghetti · 01/02/2007 13:54

hold on to that pelvic floor!

kathryn77 · 01/02/2007 13:56

id stay at work and chat on line - as blu said a disytraction.

keep n eye on pains and time them, and remember to go to the loo loads as helps labour if have empty blader

foxtrot · 01/02/2007 16:16

LOL at lulu's statistics - 2% of labours start with breaking waters - 100% record here, 3 out of 3, not a twinge, then tsunami!!!!
Haven't you gone home yet? your colleagues can bring pressies whne they visit you and your lovely baby

foxtrot · 01/02/2007 16:17

sorry, misread that - 20%

lulumama · 01/02/2007 16:19

foxtrot · 01/02/2007 16:21

Frizbe · 01/02/2007 16:25

oooh great an online birth good luck!

foxtrot · 01/02/2007 16:25

Now, where has malta gone? She's probably wondering what the washing up brush has to do with labour

answer - nothing, as far as i know

maltatheterrible · 01/02/2007 16:45

...sneaks back in through the catflap
umm, still here! all twinges stopped at 2pm ish - and she has been kicking and wriggling all afternoon so I decided it was a false alarm and i'd be safe to stay at work until 5pm.
but genuinely thankyou for all the advice, I;m going to see how things progress over night...I was really expecting to go over my EDD and have a couple of weeks at home, I have books lined up to read and everything!

(as helpful as DP suggesting I "just get on with it" at 8 months when visiting the midwife unit. the helpful darling.
