My second baby is due in just a few weeks. The doctor has told me that it is a big baby (I have borderline gest. diabetes) and he would like to induce me a week before the due date.
I had complications with my first baby, so I will take the doctor's advice. But every book I read tells horrors about induced labours, I need some reasurance.
Have any of you had induced labours that ended well, natural , without cesearean, ventuse, forceps, etc???
Please please please tell me your story.

HI Dior,
I don't mind the epidural or any pain relief, I am just so scared of ventuse and forceps. And I really don't want another cesearean.
Good to know all went well for you.

if i may offer some advice....firstly, try to stay mobile, and listen to your body..as there are good positions to birth a larger baby in, rather than on a bed strapped to a monitor and an IV...if you can, discuss intermittent monitoring / telemetry ...or having the monitor on but being allowed to move.....

epidural can make forceps or ventouse more likely

did you have a c.s first..the options for induction might well be more limited...

I was induced at 37 weeks, as waters broke. Took mobile epidural and it was a breeze right until the last pushing stage. Spent two hours pushing at the end, with no pain relief other than gas and air. Foudn it quite stressful, but first time mum and total woos. Utterly exhasuting and Doctors were keen to intervene but nice Midwife let me keep going. DS was coming out superman style so did have a 2nd degree tear and a whack load of stitches, but def no forceps, ventouse or C Section.

I agree with lulumama here, i had DS1 induced at 38 weeks and found the longer i stayed mobile the better, I had no pain relife and a very short labour, DS1 was little at 6lb 2oz but i did get lots of sticthes due to the speed of the birth.

Good luck.

I was induced with DS at 38wks, and he was born v. quickly with no pain relief. Basically no time and I refused G&A as it made me v. woozzy with DD. And at 8lb 3oz he wasn't a small babe.

I was given the drug at 1pm, basically walked around the hospital going back every 1 1/2 hrs. At 6:30 they decided to have a little check, then decided to break waters at 7:30. DS born at 8:38. Only problem was a 2nd degree tear on the way out -- but consultant says it was because he was born sooo quickly. (about 2 contractions took me from 5 cm to 10cm)

haven't been induced myself, but couple of friends have recently, one for PROM, one for being overdue. it went fine without any other intervention for both of them. and one had no pain relief whatsoever.

hope it goes well for you too

TrinityRhino · 24/01/2007 20:00

I was induced with dd2 at 41 weeks

It was fine, no more painful that my first birth, I had G&A for a long time and then did have an epidural but let it wear off for the poushing stage. uick labour, came on nicely, not too strong or fast. Had no forceps, ventouse or anything liekt hat at all. no stitches, went very smoothly and she was 8lb 2oz (not huge but just thought I'd add that)
You'll be fine

Roobedoo · 24/01/2007 20:09

I was induced for my second child as I was overdue. Having had a forceps delivery with my first child (not induced) I was terrified, however, it was great!

Lots of waiting around in the morning (so take things to do because if they're busy they won't induce you straight away) and once I'd had the pessary took a good 4 hours for contractions to start. Anyway, contractions started at 4-5 mins apart, an hour later my waters were broken and an hour after that my baby was born (6 mins pushing - no stitches!) Had gas and air after waters broken. It was amazing.

I do think second time round it's generally easier anyway.

I was told that if you keep relaxed the induction works better so the labour progresses faster. They do encourage you to walk around to get things going, but I found I only started contracting once I properly relaxed on the bed.

Anyway - good luck! You know you'll have your baby soon.

clayre · 24/01/2007 20:16

i was induced with my first child and it was easy, pessary at 10.00pm, contractions started at 1.00am baby at 6.42am, they told me it was going to long and hard and drips and drugs but other than the pessary i had nothing else, but i was very mobile walking all the time.

i asked to be induced with second baby but he was born before i was due to be induced.

good luck

mamijacacalys · 24/01/2007 21:06

Induced with DD last July.
Had one Propess t-bag thingy only (no gel pessaries or drips) which, on cue, started labour 24 hrs after being inserted.
Told Registrar to bugger off and leave me alone once labour started (he was waffling about drips and epidurals but I was having none of it).
Four hours later she was born, 8lb 12, face to pubis, and boy did she take some pushing (!) but did not need any other intervention or pain relief aside from a few whiffs of gas and air at the end of the 1st stage.
So was generally happy 'natural' type labour apart from initial induction.

spudmasher · 24/01/2007 21:17

Induced at 42 weeks. No probs just a few stitches! They did the deed at 10pm and dd was born by 10 am the next day. The best thing was to walk around as much as possible and try to feel that it was something I was doing, not something that was happening to me.Good luck hun.

leahsmum · 24/01/2007 22:37

I was induced with my first pg at 39+4 due to pre-eclampsia. Had gel inserted at 7am,started having mild contractions (back pain) from bout 9.30ish, was put on the monitor about 12 to find baby heart beat dipping slightly so I was sent to labour ward and had my waters broken at 1pm. Delivered naturally with no further intervention at 5pm. Had 2 stitches and a perfectly healthy 6lb baby girl. Only problem I found was that I was not allowed to remain mobile after my waters were broken as I was attached to a BP monitor the whole time - nothing like adding insult to injury when mid contraction the BP monitor decides to tighten on your arm too!!
Honestly though, dont worry about it - I'm sure all will go well, I definately had a positive birth experience first time round - otherwise I wouldnt be sitting here with 3 weeks to go to due date for number 2!
Hope all goes well for you!!

shonaspurtle · 24/01/2007 22:47

I was induced at 41+3. Had 1 pessary and that kicked off fairly mild but regular contractions, waters broke about 6 hours later, ds born 5 hours after that.

Had g&a and morphine and it was very intense but I guess no more than it would have been if my waters had broken in their own sweet time .

I felt very negative about induction before my experience but it worked out fine. Good luck with yours

Highlander · 25/01/2007 12:37

aren't the stats for a first (ie first baby) induction somehting like 40% end up as an emCS, with the remaining 30% as "assisted" (read:butchering) deliveries?

nappyaddict · 25/01/2007 12:41

mine was fine. was induced at 6:30. back ache at 10:30. waters broken for me at 2ish. at this point it started to hurt so had gas and air. was feeling sick on G&A so didn't use it. then felt like i couldn't cope so asked for pethidine. mw went to get it, i said i thought i needed to push. she said it was too early and said it would be a poo. went to get cardboard bowl thing, came back "oh gosh, there's a head you were right you do need to push." in about 3 pushes ds was out and in my arms by 5:10

all very positive!

oh and ds was posterior.
