I went to 38 weeks 8lb12oz jaundiced, furry bundle of joy delivered by cs (after 48 hour labour)

Have you got it?

SparklyGothKat · 19/01/2007 00:27

misdee did

Greensleeves · 19/01/2007 00:41

I did. I'm not sure how useful my experience would be though, as I had lots of other complications too and ended up being induced at 35 weeks because of a combination of diabetes, pre-eclampsia and other factors. If anyone wants to talk about gestational diabetes and I can help though, I am more than happy to chat about it.

Greeny does the GEst D make it more likely for pre-eclamp as I had increased bp (was very high) and protien etc so was in for monitoring incase went pre-eclampitic

Greensleeves · 19/01/2007 00:47

Yes, it increases the risk of pre-eclampsia, though I'm not sure by how much. I got the diabetes at about 23 weeks, injected insulin every day, then got admitted with pre-eclampsia at 29 weeks and kept in until I was induced at 35. I don't think it always goes hand in hand though - I was quite overweight, which is a risk factor for both, and diabetes runs in the family although high blood pressure doesn't as far as I know.

Yes I did and went full term - well 39 weeks - I would call that full term for 2nd pregnancy. Normal labour and birth. DD in SCBU for a few days to monitor blood sugar levels - all OK. TBH I felt a bit of a fraud as all the other babies there were tiny and some, sadly, very ill. When we first arrived the nurse said don't bother bringing in clothes for her we'll provide those and make it easier for you. Then when I unwrapped her from her blankets she said on second thoughts we don't do them that big (9lb6oz).

I don't really remember any suggestion that it would affect going full term.

I am on second pregnancy and had gd with previous one (but diet controlled). This time I have had to go on insulin - currently 35 weeks - feel fine and had discussion with consultant yesterday - I am having elective c-section at 38-39 weeks - my choice - had previous c-section (but went into labour) and dd was full term - 40 +wks. She was 10lb 14 and they expect this one to be 9lb+

He said they would let me go full term and would let me try to deliver naturally - but I understand that they will only let you labour for so long - the problem is the size of the baby not the sugar levels of you as you are wired up to a drip giving dextrose and insulin.

I reckon everyone is different and it depends uponthe hospital policy

3andnomore · 21/01/2007 18:39

I had GD with my 2. pg, and got to 38+2 weeks, when the lil man decided it was time to come out...

BBWBabeLisa · 21/01/2007 18:51

I have type 2 diabetes, which I believe is treated similarly to GD. Was on insulin & metformin throughout pregnancy and was induced at 38 weeks. They were gonna induce earlier coz I developed Obstetric Cholestasis too (one of the consultants said there seemed to be a higher number of diabetic/GD mums getting OC than non-diabetic but that was just his observation, don't know if theres any fact to back that up, but keep an eye out for severe itching, particularly on the hands and feet, but anywhere really and seek medical attention if you experience it). OC was kept under control with drugs though & daily monitoring, I was given a course of steroids to mature DDs lungs and was induced at 38 wks as had been the plan all along (I was told they always induce at 38 wks with diabetes, but dunno if that includes GD). Ended up in emergency CS as DD had a massive head that wasn't for budging (91st percentil for head circumference compared to 50th for weight). She was in SCBU for about 36 hrs for low blood sugars.
Hope all goes well for you.

yes i had gd with my dd1 and ds1 and2 , with dd i went to full term plus one week and she was 8lb 9.
ds was induced at 36 weeks due to other complications and weighed 7lb 14, his blood sugars dropped though so he briefly went into scbu, he also had jaundice.
ds2 was induced at 38 weeks weighing 9lb 7 and was briefly admitted to scbu for breathing difficulties which were unrelated.
