DS was 9lb 13oz, got stuck, was ventouse with episiotomy. I am now 4 days overdue - they think this one will be over 10lbs and I'm very scared about the pushing out part. I'm worried about a) it getting stuck again b) tearing into pieces.

Have heard so many horror stories over last few weeks about big babies, I really need some "oh it was a breeze" ones!

thanks kr, mw did suggest induction come 40 weeks if baby appeared big but now things have changed.!!!

Suppose I won't know how I will cope till push come to shove . Im only 4ft 11in and dh is over 6ft so thats gives me concern...think I must cook em big..!

flack · 18/01/2007 14:30

Friend recently had a homebirth with a 10lber. "They" didn't know he was 10 lb or "they" wouldn't let her have him at home, have already said she can't have any possible future baby at home (grrrr).

That's even though She didn't have a single problem with him, not a scrape, not a stitch, nothing bad at all. He just came out fine and quickly (her previous babies were much smaller and more bother).

ivelostmyboobsboohoo · 18/01/2007 14:31

my first baby was 9lb 12 oz and a horrid birth, so opted for elective section the 2nd time on basis that it would prob be bigger- and he was smaller- 8lb 13oz. my 3rd baby i had naturally (tho induced!) and she was smaller still 8lb 5 oz andd no drugs. so they dont always get bigger!

goingfor3 · 18/01/2007 14:32

My first was 7lb 12oz I tore. My second was 9lb 1oz, I didn't even have a scratch it was easier and she just slid out.

calmontheoutside · 18/01/2007 14:43

My DH's Granny had twins, 22lb between them, they thought it was a Scottish record at the time. She was a tall woman and of course, they didn't really comment then on the downsides... I'm sure they slid out...

nwgreenmum · 18/01/2007 15:18

My DH was 13 pounds when he was born (29 years ago). They didn't have scans then and MIL is sure that she was 4 weeks over, but they didn't believe her dates. She delivered normally, and although they then decided not to have any more (he was their third) she said it was a bit of a struggle but OK
He is now 6foot7. This worried me as I am 5foot2 and a smidgen (sp?), but my babies fitted my size not his.

katierocket · 18/01/2007 15:50

SHHH - I was told that they don't consider it a large baby unless it's over 9lb 15oz. My first was 9lb 13oz so just missed that. In any case they wouldn't really do anything different even if they thought it was big. Having said that my SIL, who had a 10lb 10oz baby and a 3rd degree tear was given the choice for an elective C/S second time round.

If you're really worried about it you shoudl press to speak to a consultant or a different midwife. A lot of the stories on here are very positive so hopefully everything will be fine for both of us!

No sign mine is coming though.

I like this thread - all the recent threads on tearing have made me scared about getting pg again (even though I'm not planning to do so in the immediate future!).

I saw an amazing birth on Discovery Health a few weeks ago. The woman was giving birth on all fours but then had to be turned over on to her back because the shoulder got a bit stuck - the midwife did that procedure (can't remember the name of it) to free the shoulder and out the baby came - it was nearly 12 lbs but the woman didn't even need one stitch!

My personal experience is not that comforting as my 9lb 4ouncer got stuck and I needed forceps. I had an episiotomy and I tore.

HOWEVER my cousin had a nightmare first labour with her 8lb 8oz daughter so chose to have her son at home. She had a natural birth, with no pain relief and needed only 2 stiches. The baby weighed 10lb 9oz. She said she actually enjoyed the labour.

singersgirl · 18/01/2007 20:25

Almost exactly the same as Pamina. DS2 was just under 9lb (so not that big) but it took 3 pushes and about a minute and a half to get him out. I tore slightly (less than half a cm) but that was only because I was in a ridiculous position.

MrsMills · 18/01/2007 20:34

To reiterate some of the advice already given, be as mobile as you possibly can. DS2 was a homebirth and weighed in at 10lb 5oz. Go with what your body is telling you, for me I backed into a corner of the bedroom against the corner of the bed and delivered there. That was obviously the only part of the floor that wasn't covered in some sort of carpet protection!

Anyway, I didn't tear, had no stitched, no epsiotomy, no grazing which I had with DS1 who only weighed 7lb but I delivered him on my back as i was being monitored in hospital.

I really think it was my position which stopped DS2 from tearing me apart (or that's how it felt)!

MrsMills · 18/01/2007 20:36

and although I can't remember the measurements, DS2's head was massive

tortoiseSHELL · 18/01/2007 20:39

MI - are you serious? Twins, with both over 10lb????? So, with two placentas, say weighing 5lb each, that's 30 pounds to carry!

kseaj · 18/01/2007 21:21

i have not had big babies dd was 7lb 5oz ds1 was 6lb 8oz and ds2 was 7lb 7oz. What iam trying to say is that for me ds2 was my biggest baby and my easist(sp) labour.

My friends first baby was 9lb 11oz no tears and no stitches, all through her second pg she was told this is going to be a big baby also, she was scanned at 38 weeks and they told her it would be big so they would induce at 41 weeks. Baby was born weighing 7lb 15oz.

motherinferior · 18/01/2007 21:23

Apparently so. The mind boggles, doesn't it.

kseaj · 18/01/2007 21:24

meant to say they would induce at 41 weeks if she had not already had it.

Nemo2007 · 18/01/2007 21:25

DS was 9lbs1 no tears or stitches, was told both DDs were big babies and would be over 10lbs but both came out at 6lbs 14ozs

mistletoemania · 18/01/2007 21:29

haven't read all this thread but i had 9il 10oz baby and 9il 80z baby both two weeks over due. first one i had epidural and went on for ages but no bad pain experience. 2nd nothing and flash backs still. so keep walking i had to get drug to help me contract. you do what is best for you. NO MEDALS FOR BRAVERY is what i say. best of luck to you. a new baby how lovely [hugs]

LadyOfTheFlowers · 18/01/2007 21:31

i had a 9lb 9 baby naturally in the pool and tore, but it really was no big deal, and i'm a wimp. then 14 months later had a 10lb 12 baby with no tear naturally in the pool.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 18/01/2007 21:32

ds1s head was 35cm and ds2s was 36.5cm.

ejDeedos · 18/01/2007 22:10

dd1 in hospital, 9lbs15oz, big head tiny tear but no stitches. (2 hours of pushing)

dd2 9lbs3oz at home, similar head, tiny tear had one stitch. She fair flew out! 2nd stage was 11 minutes and only remember pushing a couple of times. And everyone thought she was going to be huge - sent to see consultant a couple of times to check size as I wanted a home birth.

No drugs for either, but used pool for 1st stage.

I stood up leaning on bed for dd1 and ironing board for dd2 . (A top tip for my sister who used to be a midwife - the standing up part).

stitch · 18/01/2007 22:20

my grandmother gave birth to 11 pound dad in 1937. no pain relief of course. she went on to have another 6 kids.

pookey · 18/01/2007 22:51

Katierocket I haven't finished reading the thread but thankyou so so much for starting this, it is giving me hope that I shoudnt abandon idea of a homebirth for baby no 2 after a biggish 1st baby (9lb4 doesnt win any prizes on this thread lol). I am still worried about the shoulders getting stuck though; did anyone have this with a first but not with subsequent deliveries?

Shhh I had the same thing, found out after the birth they had a senior midwife attending my abandoned homebirth because my bump was so big and they were speculating about what a big baby ds was likely to be - but all i heard was 'well it wont be small prob 7 or 8 lb - a nice size'!
