elective c section - how do I get myself first on the list?

I'm booked in for an elective c'section on Monday morning (eek!! am dead nervous and dead excited and just counting the hours...)

Anyway, when I went for pre op on Friday, the midwife told me 3 women are booked in for an elective section at 9am on Monday (me being one of them). The midwife said that the surgeon just 'looks at the list and decides which order he's doing them in'. However, this means one of us will end up having baby in afternoon and I just can't bear the thought of sitting around all day on pins and an empty stomach waiting all that time.

Does anyone know how the surgeon will make a decision and any tips to get myself at top of list. Am going to arrive mega early just in case it does end up being first come, first served...

Thanks

even if you are first on the list you may end up waiting all day as emergencies take precendence. I was booked for my 2nd one at 10.30 - they took the woman who was first on the list and then had a couple of emergencies. I ended up being wheeled into surgery around 3.30pm.

I would go in prepared for a wait and if it does not happen - then you are lucky.

xenabelly - I was put on a drip from about 3:30. I was also given the option of going home and coming back the following Monday, but if I had done that then dh wouldn't have been able to be with me, so I decided to wait it out. Yes, I'm afraid that I was hungry but of course you forget all about it once you have your new baby .

tissy, let's not tar all London midwives. The one I got for my elective at QE Hospital, SE London was lovely. The ward ones weren't so great though.

Unfortunately it's just the nature of busy hospitals. I know someone who went in for elective surgery in a private hospital. Operation was supposed to be at 10am and ended up being at around 5pm.

One thing she did say if you end up waiting is that she got v thirsty around, say, 1pm, and the anaesthetist told her to drink as much water as she could in one go. This way she stocked up on water and less of it would be in her stomach when they did the op (i.e. there was time for it to be absorbed).

I was booked in for an elective section on Tuesday morning (one of three) and had to book in at 4pm on Monday. After fasting from tea time that night, they finally told me at 2pm on the Tuesday that I'd been cancelled. I was 'first on the list' for the Wednesday morning. I finally had him at 15.51 that day. I was in hospital for 8 minutes off 48 hours before finally delivering. This was 5 weeks ago in the biggest maternity hospital in central Manchester.

Where's the birth announcement then?

When I had my electve, I was booked in for it a few weeks in advance.
I was first for that day unless any emergencies came up, in which case I would go after them.
I was originally booked for 9am, one emergency did come up but DS was born at 10am. I had been at the hospital since 7am so I felt I was quite lucky after hearing some stories here.

When I had my elective c'section with dd2 the mv told me there were 3 people booked in and it was a case of whoever was ready first got the first slot. I got there really early and explained to the mv that I'd like to go first if possible, she got me ready for theatre soon after we arrived and we were first in.

hello all...

It's a BOY!!!

Have been in hospital since Monday morning - just came back Saturday teatime. They thought baby had an infection but turned out he was fine - am so glad to be home with my little man.

We turned up for section at 7.30am, we were first on the list (hurrah!- no idea why though) but there was an emergency in front of us so eventually went in at 11.00am and baby Adam was born at 11.38am weighing 7lbs 15 and is absolutley gorgeous. It was all a very positive experience and I am sore but on top of the world!

Motherhood Rocks!!
