Have I started labour?

Sorry first time mum and this wasnt what I was expecting so im unsure if this is it.
Ive read Egypts thread and seem to be getting a lot of the same symptoms.

Since 9am I have been getting really bad back pains. They are in my lower back and seem to come in waves. Some of them are stronger than others and they are about every 7 mins. With some of them I also get a painful cramping sensation in my lower stomach, as if im having a heavy period. The thing thats confused me is that if it is contractions I expected them to all be in my stomach not my back. They dont seem to ease when I walk around.
Does this sound like it could be happening or is it my imagination getting carried away.
Thanks Kbaby 40+4

I have no experience of 'going into labour' or of proper contractionss so no advice, but wanted to wish you loads of luck and hope it happens soon!

mothernature · 27/05/2004 11:02

It does sound like it could be..cramping like a heavy period is one of the signs, gets stronger and stronger as they day goes on, good luck..make sure you have everything you need near by just in case things progress quickly, get someone to be with you so they can call whoever to let them know how things are going. If unsure call the hospital they will give you more information as to when you should go to the hospital etc..

Soapbox · 27/05/2004 11:02

Kbaby - it sounds like it to me

IME you will find that they gradually get stronger but they can stay in the back for quite a long time yet. Still sounds quite early on to me so amybe you should have something carbo to eat and a nice relax in the bath for a while and see how you do.

Good luck - hopefully you will meet your bump soon

littlerach · 27/05/2004 11:03

All my pains were in my back.....
Had them for a day before I had a show, then realised what was going on!!!
Good Luck!!!

kbaby - this is exactly how my labour started, back pains (in my case because my dd was posterior - though didn't find this out till a LONG way into labour!) and very strong periody like cramps. These were every 5-10 minutes and were strong enough to wake me up (they started around 2am) and I wanted to walk about or at least stand through them.

This may be what the midwives call 'pre-labour' but in my case it certainly got to be very painful and was a precursor to full on contractions coming every minute.

As I said on Egypts thread the best advice is to try to rest. Or go for a walk, as that may get things moving. Take a warm bath or shower. Personally I was too excited that I was in labour to follow any such tips - but I wish I had!!

Very excited for you ... looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Toothache · 27/05/2004 11:06

kbaby - I had absolutely NO pain in my stomach at all apart from the dull ache of period pains. It was all in my back as ds was posterior.

It certainly sounds like things are on the move!
Get on your hands and knees if it's comfortable or sit backwards on a chair, leaning over the back of it. I found that really helped. As they got stronger I stood facing a wall, leaning on it swaying my hips back and forth.

Keep us posted!

webmum · 27/05/2004 11:06

It sounds like my labour started.

Best of luck kbaby and keep us posted!!

Piffleoffagus · 27/05/2004 11:07

I would equate my labour with firm period ache pains for the early stages, that then changed to
"oh jesus what was that then" kind of pains
sounds liem you could be on the go
another mn baby weee heee
GOOD luck!!!!!!!!!

throckenholt · 27/05/2004 11:12

My pains were mostly in my back too (both times). Called back labour and is something to do with the position of the baby.

Certainly sounds like it could be labour.

kbaby · 27/05/2004 12:27

I think this is it. Theyve been getting stonger so that I cant do anything when I get one. Ive called the hospital who have said to call them back once they are 3 minutes apart and lasting a minute. Ive taken some paracetomol and my DP's comming home to put on my tens machine. If this is early labour god help me when it gets worse. My natural birth may be going out the window!!

Hopefully update you soon with baby news.
Thanks everyone. Ill try and have a bath and some food.

back labour is not nice !

Try to keep walking around - that might help the baby to turn.

Good luck.

Toothache · 27/05/2004 12:41

Oooh how exciting - good luck kbaby - keep us posted. Don't worry about the pain, you can always have drugs when you get to hospital

prufrock · 27/05/2004 13:21

Good luck kbaby - hope the TENS helps

foxinsocks · 27/05/2004 13:31

Good luck and if you are in terrible pain, I would go in. My first labour was in my back and my contractions never lasted a minute! Once they were spacing evenly (3-5 mins apart) and not going away, I went into hospital. They were sure they were going to send me away but when they examined, I was 8 cm dilated. So trust your instincts and if you are in enormous pain and they're not abating and are coming regularly, go and get checked out!

Good luck, fingers crossed and I'm very excited for you. Not long now xx

SpringChicken · 27/05/2004 15:41
