Should I delay growth scan? Thoughts please!!

Recent growth scans have shown a really big baby.
I am due for a final growth scan this Thursday pm. I will be 36+5 weeks. I've then got an appointment to see the consultant on Friday morning to see the consultant to discuss how long they'll let me go before inducing me.
It got booked at my last appointment before xmas, when I saw the registrar. I was in a bit of a state for different reasons and did n't really ask why it had to be then. It seems very early to me to be making the final decision, as she made it clear that they would do nothing before 37 weeks (at the earliest). I'm wanting to avoid really early induction if possible, without endangering the baby.
I've had 2 scans recently - one to check growth and then a further one to check some abdominal issues with a Professor. All is fine with the baby...it's just big. I'm 5ft 9" by the way and this is my second baby. My ds was 7lbs 8 at 39+2 weeks and a vaginal birth.
scan - 33+4 weeks est weight 7lbs
scan - 34+4 weeks est weight 8lbs
femur length, abdominal circumference, weight are all above 95th percentile, rest of measurements at 95th!!
I'm thinking of cancelling the scan and discussing it with the consultant on Friday. If they do feel the need to scan asap. Then they could do it early the following week. I'm hoping the growth will have slowed off and it was an early growth spurt.
At my last scan, the doctor scanning me said my best chance of delivering the baby naturally, was if I went into labour without medical intervention. She said that hopefully I cook on the early side, as she thought it extremely unlikely that I'd be allowed to go to full term.
Any thoughts? I'm going from feeling v.positive one day (as I'm making a big effort to be as prepared as possible - practising breathing, labour positions, visualisation , perineum massage, yoga, raspberry leaf tea etc!!) to be pretty terrified the next.

harry...take 0 - 3 rather than newborn, just in case !

great news galmum..you feel confident in birthing this baby..that is excellent news....!

DaisyMOO · 06/01/2007 12:14

Actually I would take both newborn and 0-3. My last baby was 10lb 13oz and he was still swamped by 0-3 month stuff for a few weeks because he was chubby rather than having particularly long limbs. Baby clothes don't take up much room anyway so you haven't lost much if you take things you don't need. JMO!

Really hope appointment goes well on Monday Harry - you must be so ready to get baby out and say goodbye to SPD.
I have thrown some 0-3 month baby clothes in a bag to be left in the car, including the 0-3 month snow suit (which is enormous!). If LO really can't fit into the newborn stuff, dh can pop out to get it.

I told you my Mum bought some 3-6 month clothes for the baby, as she thought the 0-3 month stuff looked tiny!! Not only that, but it is in a xmas design (well winter with snowflakes and a robin on it). It may look a little strange in March/April! She's a complete lune sometimes. She always buys odds & sods, things that don't match or they do but the ages are all different, either in the sale or she washes them before I see them so I can't change the size! That's my job Mum, to buy bits & bobs - you're loaded - please just buy me 1 lovely little outfit! I know - spoilt ungrateful daughter!!

PS She is a fabulous Mum (just a bit hyper from the HRT). She's off ski-ing with Dad at mo - last year's hip replacement is not an issue - she's only 65!

LOL at Galmum's mum!

My mother spounds exactly like yours! She phoned me yesterday to say that she was in Debenhams and had seen some lovely sleepsuits with a Christmas pattern on them. They were 6-9 months and she askes whether I wanted her to pick them up for the baby for next Christmas. Given that the baby will be 6 months in July, I declined her offer!

Think I'll take 3 sizes of clothes:

  1. Little baby - just in case last growth scan was wrong (I'm just being optimistic here)
  2. Newborn (as they go up to 10 pounds)
  3. 0-3 in case he's massive

Yes - your Mum sounds a lot like mine!

Once we've got these little bundles we must start a thread to discuss a) mad but lovely Mothers and b) the weird & wonderful baby gifts that start arriving.

My piece de resistance was being given a new born baby bib, in green & yellow with LOTS of lace, fashioned to look like an elephant with a dummy at the end of the trunk! Not only was it REALLY girly (we had a little boy), and my son was n't using a dummy, but it was the most horrendous piece of trailer trash I have ever seen. On opening it dh and I were rendered speechless! Nice one FIL and Stepmum!

A friend of mine had a baby in June and being a hairdresser, she had lots of visitors after the birth. One old lady who had a regular blue rinse brought my friend a beautiful gift - it was a bottle green knitted cardigan with lace edging and matching bottle green buttons . It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen! Needless to say, she never put it on the baby.

When people ask me what I'd like for the baby, I just say gift vouchers because my dp's cousin bought gifts for his other cousin (confusing!) when her baby was born last February. She bought her an orange and aubergine cardigan with big purple knitted flowers on it! It was hideous, but she liked it so much, that she'd bought it in 2 sizes!!!!
